NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. AUGUST 18, 1877. CHEBOYGAN COUNTY FOR FAR 31 M The late strike has awakened the eiti eens of the country to the necessity of devising some means for the relief of the laboring classes, and many different theories are advanced as the means of solving the great problem, all of which have their advocates. The most general opinion, however, seems to be that it i necessary that more of the laboring classes should devote themselves to agri cultural pursuits and become producers instead of consumers. The fact that all the products of the farm are at the pres to! time commanding prices far in exee-s of any other products h o v s that agricul tural pursuits have not been overdone. Whilst all manufactured products have fallen in price to what they were before the war, and many much lower, the pro duct? of the farm command a better pi-ice and arc not in proportion to the price of other commodities, and farmers are doing better to-day than those en gaged In any other...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. AUGUST 25, 1877. THE OUTLOOK. Since tb depression in the price ol lumber first began, there has been a steady downward tendency in prices un til the present time. As each year came around, with even lower price?, it was thoiightf.fjiirely, values had touched bot tom, and prices must go up or the lum ber interests go to the wall. Until to day it eeins as 1r the bottom had fallen entirely out and it was no use to longer ligbl against fate. Lumber being the chutf product of export from this port, weiMiv necessarily felt this depression keenly, and while the county was being rapidly setttled by furniers, which in a measure has kept us moving along in fair prosperity with the rest o! the world, we feel that, had It not been for the de pression in the price ot lumber for so long a time, we would have been far ad vanced of what we now are, in prosperi ty t least. Por one or two reasons we believe that the worst is past, and that the out look for oar lumber manuf...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. 8ATUpPAYv4UGUST 25, 1875 4IAT HI LOST IT. From Cuer Family Magazine. CHAPTER I. The evening was warm and still, and all the doors and windows in George street were set open, and everybody who could escape from indoor occupation was out for a stroll. The people living here were decent, hard working men and women, earning enough to keep their families in eomloru and taking an honest ride in themselves and their dwellings, tost ot the windows could boast of clean muslin curtains, and the door steps were as white as bard scouring could make them. There was one house, however, whose doorstep could ill bear a compar soti with its neighbors ; and as to its cur tains, they were drab and dingy, and had been up all the winter. "Miss Ken na way don't regard appear ances, that's certain," said one matrou to another, as they took their evening walk together "If I were her 1 should be sick of Qio sight of those frightful drab curtains. And she with a smart young beau often comin...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 1, 1877. DEMOCRACY AND THE LABORER. The Democratic party in all their con ventions are trying, by passing resolu tions, to make the laboring classes be lieve that they are the only friends of that class.
