Anodes gkrattt ... of the Lower Levels. There is still one very hot place ahead in the flooded mines. It is in the 2,200 level. In approaching that point the heat will be so great in the incline that it will be almost a beyond human endurance. It Is vow intensely hot below the 2,100 level, but tbe heat will be very much greater before the 2,200 level is drained. The beat aud steam now ascending is from the small ■urface of water exposed to the in cline. Tbe critical time will be when the water begins to fall away from the roofs of the long drifts and other openings on the 2,200 level. Then the steam aud beat rising from a great surface of water will move to the incline, up which it will riu.li lv seething, blinding volume. At present the steam is kept back, and only escapes from the comparatively small surface exposed in tbe incliue. In ap proaching the 2,000-foot level the workmen in tbe Savage experi enced something of what will be seen at the 2,200. As tbe water began to recede o...

The ... of Wrong. We have lately devoted, some •pare moments to a consecutive reading of Victor Hugo's "L'Annee Terrible," the history of a crime. Tbe strong dramatic impulses of the man, his fondness for antith esis, a fondness which runs almost to tbe verge of the finicky, his im petuous apostrophes and fine fac ulty of invective, make the book a study. No excess of mannerism, however, can divest Victor Hugo of the intellectual energy and virility which, had it been divided amongst two intellectual athletes, would have caused the productions ofeaeh to be characterized by a more correct taste but which would have left both great men. §0$ &wst\t<i Jtmtfcl. Seraflna, Countess Cagliostro, tbe wife of the gentleman qualified by Mr. Carly le ac "tbe quack of quacks —the most perfect scoundrel tbat In these latter ages has marked the world's history," visited England In 1787 and took lodgings in Sloane street, Knightsbridge. The Count advertised In tbe newspapers his "Egyptian Pills" at thirty shillings the drachm; while tbe Countess did a very thriving business among tbe female nobility and gentry by selling the "Wine of Egypt," "pro ducing restoration of vigor, youth and beauty to the worst wrinkled and the most worn out." Thiselixir was very costly, and tbe Countess adduced herself us a living evidence of its efficacy. She averred that she was 90years old, and tbat she had a grandson who was a retired Ad miral in the Dutch service. Iv re ality, she was a young and bloom ing woman of six and twenty.
