Hays City Free Press. "HAYS CITY, KAN 3. WORTHLESS FARMS. American agriculture shows a strange contrast. With the price of farm prod ucts higher than ever before, farm land has depreciated in. value, and the number of abandoned farms steadily - Increases. Figures gathered by the con serration commission are surprising. . It Is shown that there are 16,000 Bquare miles. of abandoned farms, chief ly in New England, New York, the southeast and the middle central states. That Is, there are In the United States at present 10,000,000 acres of abandoned farm land an area as large as the cul tivated part of the Canadian north west, 15 times the size of Rhode Is land, four times the size, of Connecti cut, twice the size of Massachusetts, or half as large as Ohio, says Cleve land Plain Dealer. Of the many rea sons advanced to explain this deser tion of farms, two or three are espe cially worth noticing. Most Impor tant of all, perhaps. Is the wasteful sys tem of cultivation that has so long pr...

Hays City Free Press. WAYS CITY. KAN 3. RESTORING A LOST EMPIRE. The possible realization of the pro ject for reopening the old empire of Nebuchadnezzar to civilization, a pro ject which only yesterday was only a dream. Is foreshadowed by the ef forts of the Turkish government to reclaim 12,500,000 acres of waste land In Northern Mesopotamia through Ir rigation, says New York World. Given the success of the experiment, the ancient realm of Assyrian and Babylonian monarchs may then be re fertlllzed and repeopled with an in dustrious race and the world's old granary restored after centuries of desolation. Mesopotamia's greatness was due to a system of Irrigation canals In connection with the Tigris and Euphrates. It was by their neg lect that it declined and was trans formed Into a sandy plain, the haunt of nomad races. Within recent times the engineer and the archeologlst liave invaded it, the former plotting the route of the Bagdad railway which Is to unite It with the Western world...

CLUB TO PROMOTE HAPPINESS. au ciuds exist to matce peopie com fortable and happy they can have no other ralson d'etre but London has a new club which specializes in happiness, so to speak' says Chica go Record-Herald. None but the happy can belong to it; none but those who seek happiness will be permitted .to "have a good cry" in order to real ize happiness. The idea of such a club, it seems, was suggested by the splendid success of Maeterlinck's charminc and beautiful noem-nlav. "The Blue Bird." This is a delicious fantasy for children and adults alike, and it teaches the truth that happi ness lies near at hand, in one's home and Immediate surroundings, rather than in distant unrealizable plans and ambitions. Those who deliberately and assiduously seek happiness fail to find It, or find it only when, after many dis appointments and shattered illusions, they return home apparently empty handed. It may seem at first that the moral of Maeterlinck...
