In the year 1798 the peasantry of Ireland were treated with unusual harshness after the suppression of the rebellion. The Orange faction, whose loyalty consisted in religious bigotry and a deadly hatred to the Catholics, was clothed by the go vernment with unlimited power, but how it was abused can be found in tho melancholy history of that peri od.
