The Heart's Guests. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

The Heart's Guests. When age hath cast its shadows O'er life's declining way, And the evening twilight gathe s Round our departing day— Then we shall set and ponder On the dim and shadowy past; Within the heart's still chambers The guests will gather fast. The friends in youth we cherished Shall come to us once more, Again to hold communion As in the days of yore. They may be stern and sombre, They may be young and fair, But the heart will have its chambers— The guests shall gather there. How shall it be, my sisters, Who, then, shall be our guests ? How shall it be, my brothers, When life's shadow on us rests? Shall we not, 'midst the silence, In accents soft and low, % Then hear fauiilliar voices Afld words of long ago 1 Shall we not see dear faces, Sweet smiling as of old ? Till the midst of that still chamber Are sunset clouds of gold? When age has cast its shadows O'er life's declining way, And the evening twilight gathers Hound our departing day !

Charles Augustus ; — OR,— LOVE LIES BLEEDING. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

Charles Augustus ; — OR, — LOVE LIES BLEEDING. A ROMANCE. Cu.IITIiR I. The moan was up— 44 By heavens, what a sight''— when a solitary horseman might have been seen climbing the unbrageous road that skirts the leafy hanks and mary windings of the San Lorenzo. He Was a youth with lofty I row, and his alabaster gaze was fixed on vacancy. Another horseman approaches him from the op. posite direction. Our hero raises his "darkly, deeply, beautifully blue" eyes, and his glance meets the eagle orbs of the other, w hen this conversation cDsues: '•Hello I" " What's the news?" " Nuthin'." '• Fine day." " Jest so." And the mysterious stranger disappears in the nebulous distance. Our hero pauses. What means that sinister smile upon those haughty lips? Ah! Matilda Ann 1 I see it now. This is the trysting hour. The wretch! I will away to the bower of her I love. Avaunt! — (E*lt on a dog trot.) CIUITKK 11. The silvery moou, 44 rouud as my father's shield," was still shining in dimples of light up...

A Modern Lady's Wants. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

A Modern Lady's Wants. Wanted ! a man to take my name, And give ine one that I may use In credit for my silks and fame, And smile and ogle when 1 chose. Wanted ' a kind, obedient mate, Who will not always think it wrong, While he is laboring long and late, If 1 am with the dance and song. Wanted! a husband who'll return From labor's long and sultry day. And cook his supper, and not spurn, If I am with the beaux away. Wanted! a spouse, whose tact of purse, Will furnish all that I desire. But will not think of me the worse, If other lovers I admire. Wanted '. to please me when I'm gay, Always, some other dashing swain, And drown a wife's monotony, Who cannot always love the same. Wanted! a good church going groom. If I am ill, alone will go, And leave me in my private room, To chat, or ride with my last bean. —[Era.

An Amusing Curtain Lecture. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

An Amusing Curtain Lecture. Been out all night again. I'd like to know where you keep yourself till this time in the morning. It's not ten minutes since I heard the clock strike four.— You didn't hear it? No, of course you didn't. You wouldn't hear 'he last trump—the noise would have to travel through an acre or two of German beer before it would to your hearing. Had to go among your German friends? Had to go? I'd like to know how you had to go? Some folks are dreadful willing to 4 had 'to go. Yes, I know it's coming on election times; that's a good excuse to get away from your family and home. I wish there was no election in the whole country—it would be much better oil" it it hadn't any. What did you do all nightlong?— Who did you elect? Who did you see ? Theatre and dance? Now turn over here. Oh! Lord, am I in a hopyard or distillery, or where am I? What have you got outside of you ? Didn't drink too much?— You must have got into a beer barrel, then, for it's coming out all over ...

Spicy Extracts. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

Spicy Extracts. We found an hour's amusement in reading, in the Deseret Xews of I>ec. 5, a couple of sermons delivered the Sunday previous by Brigbam Young and Bishop Kimball.—Mirror. The Saints will llang Traitors and return to Missou ri.—Every man that used his intluence to send an army here, if the Constitution is carried out, and the da}' will come, as the Lord lives, when we shall be able to carry it out, will beat the disposal of the hemp, if we say so. The day will come as sure as the sun now shines and the Ix>rd Almighty leads us through as he has spoken from the heavens, when this people will return to the land of their inheritance. Perhaps these parents will not return, but their children will return and inherit the land prom ised to their fathers, and all the powers of hell and earth cannot prevent it.—Young. Will return with Flying Colors.—l do not intend to be brought under obligations to nor alliance with the wicked, nor to have any affinity with ...

SCHOOL NOTICE. Mrs. E. A. Husk will Teach a £ei.ect School at her residence, Mariposa, commencing Dec. 31st, 1860. Needle and llair Work taught if desired. Mariposa, Dec. 18, 1860. jfriT Being interested, with Mr. J. IT. Lawrence, formerly of the Mariposa {i Star," in the publication of the Visalia Delia, I would say to those business men, particularly of Stockton and San Francisco, desirous of advertising in country papers, that a better medium, through which to make known their btininess and particulars regarding it, hardly exists io tbe State, outside of the principal marts of trade. The Delta is the only paper of any circulation, so to tpeak, between Mariposa and los Angeles. It is located in the midst of a thickly populating and improving region, and has a large circulation, which may, and will be much increased within a short time. Visalia, too, is the point from whence many, rand, we may say, most of the supplies for Mono, Coand the region east of tlie mountains, will be •dra...

State Items. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

State Items. ....Hon, Gilrert A. Grant died in San Francisco on the last day of the year, after a short illness.— Mr. Grant was somewhat distinguished as a politician, and has served a term of 2 years in the State Senate. His kindly disposition and social qualities made him many friends, and he dies much lamented. ....The legislature convened yesterday; along and exciting session is to be looked for. Who shall be United States Senator, or shall California go without, will be a worse trouble than the same matter has ever been before. Then there is a Bulkhead Bill to come up, though it is said that project wil not be agitated this session, but whoever thinks so had better get the scales off his eyes, for it is as certain to conie up as the earth is to turn on its ax is. Then there is the Tulare canal project to appear; and then various wagon roads; and then Tule lands; and then all the wild speculations of the day. We do not in this say that some of these matters are not worthy of con...

Atlantic Items. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 8 January 1861

Atlantic Items. .... As the sounds of discord, and of, perhaps, approaching conflict between tVe North and South, grow louder, Heaven is beginning to be "implored to stay the storm. The President has issued a proclamation recommending the observance of vhe 4tli of January as a day of humiliation, lasting and prayer. He says hope seems to have deser ed the minds of men, and that God's arm alone can save us from the awful effects of our crimes and follies. Likewise the National Convention I'rayer Meeting at Washington lias recommended that the second Monday in January be set apart as a day of fasting and prayer by all Christian people, in view of the dangers threatening the Union. The people of the North will hardly say much to the Lord on the subject, for they consider his good pro- : lence remarkably manifest in the election of Lincoln. ....At a Union Meeting in New York, of merchants and politiciaas, Ex President Fillmore, and W. H. Brown were appointed a Committee to visit the Sou...
