Music, art school now in 35th year of service The non-profit Los Angeles Music and Art School is now in its thirtyfifth year of serving the Eastside community. Instruction is offered for all musical instruments and is taught by the professional teachers. All music lessons are on an individual basis. Dance classes are offered in Ballet which is taught by Pamela Collier, member of the Royal Academy of Dance of London, England. Classes in Spanish, Mexican Folklorico and Tap are taught by Sharon Barela. Classes in Pre-School Acting and Dance as well as a Song and Dance Club for Pre-Schoolers is taught by Carol Newbarr, well known voice instructor. FIRST PLACE The pupils of the Los Angeles Music and Art School continue to win first place in every contest in which it is possible for them to compete. Food stamp users spend $6.4 billion Food stamp shoppers bought over $6.4 billion worth of food with food stamps this year, according to Carol Tucker Foreman, assistant secretary of agriculture for food and consumer services. That was $3 billion more for food in 1979 than the shoppers would have spent without the food stamp program. Food stamp dollars benefit tI.S. food retailers and farmers, while helping to feed the nation’s hungry, Foreman said today. In a report on the economic effects of food stamps, the agriculture department said spending for food as a result of food stamps, the ag; iculture department said spending for food as a result of the stamps increased the income of food processors and distributors by about $1.4 billions. As a result of the increased spending brought on by food stamps in 1979, incomes of farmers increased by nearly $1 billion, according to the report by the "U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. Juvenile justice ideas are sought In the face of spiraling increases in juvenile crime, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed a motion by Supervisor Kenneth Hahn requesting District Attorney John Van de Kamp to make recommendations on how to improve the juvenile justice system. Hahn quoted figures showing that in the first 8 months of 1979, homicides committed by juveniles were up 42 percent over the same period in 1978. This represents tr murder by a juvenile every 1 &lt;4 days in Los Angeles County. "The system simply is not working,” Hahn said. “We may need changes in the State law In order to get tough with habitual juvenile offenders. ” Van de Kamp is to report back to the Board on his findings in 60 dayt.

Service awards presented by business center “Outstanding Service to Minority Enterprise” awards were presented recently by the East Los Angeles Business Development Center (ELABDC) to three McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company employees during luncheon ceremonies at the Pasta House Restaurant. Receiving awards were Norman Doninger, Director of Materials; Andres J. Reese, Small Business Administrator; and Carl Farris, Project Manager. “These gentlemen have performed far beyond the requirements of their positions in a sincere effort to increase the dollar volume of minority business,” said Sharon Turner, ELABDC Construction Department Director and founder of the award.
