THE FULL MONTE The character dynamic in "Togdog/Underdog" is familiar: Two brothers — one who's life has been filled with highs and lows, one whose spent 30 years racing toward a dead end — quarrel (this time over a game of three-card monte), continually scratching at family scabs that never heal. The powder keg that Is sibling rivalry is as old as the Bible. Cain and Abel stories have resonated for thou- sands of years (Sam Shepard's "True West" is the best), which presents pitfalls — what more is there to say about the topic? Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks fails to find much meat on this picked-over bone. It does- n't take a degree in semiotics to figure out the symbolism of naming the men Lincoln and Booth (subtle it ain't). And the play's title betrays its structure — not a roller coaster, but a seesaw. You may end up the same place you started on both, but on a seesaw the view never changes. Still, the performances.carry it, with the charismatic Rainey endlessly watchable, Kalita ...

acquitted of any charges the band's image and sales took a massive blow. Halford would soon reemerge as an industrial-metal solo act on Trent Reznor's Nothing Records label, and Judas Priest took the odd route to hire a new singer, Ripper Owens, whose previous experience was relegat- ed to fronting a Judas Priest cover band. Owens, experience was the basis for the fictionalized film "Rock Star" starring Mark Walberg. History was made in 2000 when Rob Halford decided it was time to publicly declare his sexu- al orientation during an interview on MTV. Straight metal heads around the world were shocked by the revelation, but to gay fans, the truth had always been hiding in plain sight. Halford's leather attire and cock-rock strut have all the subtlety of the Village People. Sexy, macho and slightly camp, Halford was quickly reclaimed as a gay icon and even nominated for a GLAAD media award in 2000 for bis solo album. Just as their plans for an anniversary reunion were being formed, con...

the 1920s. Spend a few hours wandering through the red brick complex of shops and cafes known as Olde Hyde Park Village if you're looking for an excuse to spend money. As recently as the late 1980s, Ybor City, one of only a few historic districts in Florida, was dilap- idated and crime-infested. This chunk of hulking red brick warehouses, balustrade balconies and cobblestone streets — a short drive northeast of downtown — formed the hub of America's cigar- manufacturing industry from the late 19th centu- ly through the 1940s. Production slowed follow- ing World War II, and beginning with the U.S. embargo on Cuban products in 1959, the neigh- borhood plummeted. Entrepreneurs, many of them artists and gallery owners, began snapping up the dramatic buildings in the 1980s. Now it's a thriving enter- tainment district. A couple of clubs hold gay nights once or twice weekly, though the discos have become increasingly straight and rowdy in recent years. Much of the retail and dining action...

relationship with the coast of Syria and its inhab- itants, while Colm Toibin witnesses an ancient celebratory ritual in a tiny, Brigadoon-ish Spanish village. Edward Field takes tea with the enigmatic expatriate Paul Bowles in Tangier — the social occasion soon turns into a battle of wills orchestrated by his host. Only two selections aren't written in the first person: Edmund White's "Death in the Desert," and Raphael Kadushin's "In Friesland." While White's excerpt from "The Married Man" is a classic, Kadushin's contribution is unfortunately the weakest of the lot. After his wonderful intro- duction, this is doubly disappointing. While the price of this collection of travel essays may seem higher than a typical trade paperback, it's all for a good cause. All royalties earned from sales of'Wonderlands" will support future gay-interest titles from the University of Wisconsin Press. All of Kadushin's selections are of a uniformly high quality and demonstrate how "We're always leavin...

Three of the greatest ballet artists of all time — Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev — were gay or bisexual. Diaghilev, a Russian nobleman, was born in March 1872 in Novgorod. A renowned choreog- rapher, he created the Ballets Russes and pro- foundly shaped the development of the art form in the 20th century. He was known for his use of talented male dancers, modern music and erotic scenarios. Diag...

Nijinsky redefined the image of the male ballet dancer. Under Diaghilev's tutelage, Nijinsky began choreographing his own productions. Among these was "Afternoon of a Faun," in which Nijinsky played the title role. Near the end of the show, the faun mastur- bates with a scarf, and Nijinsky's pelvic thrusts cre- ated quite a scandal. In 1913, Mjinsky married dancer Romola de Pulsky, which caused Diaghilev to end their relationship and dis- miss Nijinsky from his com- pany. Not long after, Nijinsky suffered a mental breakdown and was diagnosed with para- noid schizophrenia. His wife had him committed to a men- tal hospital, and he lived in various institutions until his death in 1950. Not until a decade after Nijinsky's death would the dance world again see a male ballet star of his caliber. Like Nijinsky, Rudolf Nureyev also changed public perceptions of male dancers, who were often viewed as little more than adjuncts to ballerinas. But in contrast to Nijinsky's androgyny, Nureyev pr...

ifty ings o do is week concert Voices of Change premieres new work by acclaimed composer Samuel Adler The chamber Susie group Voices of Change has spent more than 25 years specializing in new and unique immtf so it's no surprise when they offer the world premiere of a new composition. That composition, "Recalling the Yesterdays," comes from former Dallas resident Samuel Adler. Adler, although German-born, has long embraced the culture of the American West, as this work — inspired by the themes of cowboy poetry — attests. Four other pieces will also be performed, and there will be a pre-concert forum with Adler in attendance. Caruth Auditorium on the SMU campus.
