Page 5 RE-ELECT HOLDEN MAYOR We've got to keep Sachse's momentum rolling. Good starts have been made in strengthening our City ser- vices, but we must continue to focus on making our utilities more affordable, our streets more drivable, oui businesses more successful, and our library and parks more enjoyable. These are big goals, but you and working together, can make Sachse the place we want it to be. Our momentum is already causing changes. Most of our streets will be reconstructed -- not just sealed or patched - - in the next six months ('see list below). We've beefed up our police and fire departments with additional equipment and manpower. The water system has been upgraded by new water lines and a ten month project to build a second water tower. Repaving of 5th Street has begun and the signal light at Highway 78 and 5th Street will reduce the workday "automobile roulette" we encounter. A future municipal complex site was purchased in '86 to keep taxpayers from paying higher la...

Page 9 Doctors' 10-Year Campaign Ends With Lake Pointe Opening Seven doctors have seen their efforts to secure a hospital for the Lake Ray Hubbard area culmi- nate in the successful February opening of Lake Pointe Medical Center, the 100 bed medical/ surgical facility, located in the Heritage on the Lake Develop- ment, at 6800 Scenic Drive, Rowlett. All seven agree that Lake Pointe more than meets the long existing need of high-tech medi- cal/surgical services for the area, including 24-hour/7-day emer- gency room service. They are also pleased at the number, quality and range of specialties of the 60 doctors on its staff. Many of these new physicians on staff had served the local doc- tors as referral physicians. This means that in a number of cases the doctor has moved his practice to his patients. Another benefit to the area will L e the opening of local offices by these specialists. The seven doctors who led the campaign are: Dr. Randal Sparks, Dr. Robert Sparks, Dr. Carl McKenn...

' Record Bass Celebrates Birthday "Ethyl," the 173/4-pound state record largemouth bass now living at the state's Tyler Fish Hatchery, is 10 years old and was one of the original group of brood fish stocked in Lake Fork during 1978. Allen Forshage, large- mouth bass program leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said an analysis of scales re- moved from the fish reveal- ed the age and also her length each year during the 10-year period. "Rings on the scale showed a very consistent growth pattern," Forshage said, "and examination of scales taken from a 13-pounder also caught from Lake Fork show the two fish grew in length at an almost identical rate." The two big fish were the initial entries in the "Opera- tion Share a Lone Star Lunker" program spon- sored by the department and three corporations. Two other bass exceeding 13 pounds have been added to the program in recent weeks, giving Texas the world's most outstanding collection of live trophy- sized bass. Forshage sa...

Page 12 ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★-A-* ★★★★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Daughter doesn't share Mom's interests By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. One of my happiest memo- ries is of when I was a little girl in my room alone, enjoying the com- pany of a very special doll. She was quite real to me, taking turns as a friend or a child of mine. I still remember the name I gave her (Sally), and treasure the many moments of companionship and seclusion with her. What has brought these thoughts so much to mind recently is that my young daughter who is 7 years old has no such interests. I've tried to share my feelings with her, but they make no im- pression. In fact, I've noticed a kind of resentment against some- thing that was so precious to me. If you can give me some insight into why this is happening, I'd re- ally appreciate it. A. Whether it is our memories of the Depression, World War II (or the more recent ones), or old movies, we may turn off our chil-...

Qie Sentinel ^)LUME 12, NO. 5 (214) 530-1100 SACHSE,TEXAS PUBLISHED WEEKLY MARCH 19, 1987 Reynolds Preaches on 'Resurrection' at Park Lake Baptist Dedication More than 200 people filled the new sanctuary at Park Lake Baptist Church Sunday, where the Rev. Mark Reynolds chose for the dedica- tion day sermon, "The Resurrection." "We devoted last Sunday to a service on 'thanks' and for this formal dedication, we chose to preach the Gospel," Reynolds said. He also said a 24-hour prayer chain preceded Sunday's service. Reynolds, the church's founder, brings a dynamic presence to the pulpit, both as a minister and as a singer. He is accompanied by his wife, Judy, the church pianist, or by a special tape effect provided by the new sound system. Reynolds is a graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO, and before this position, he served as associate pastor and music direc- tor at three churches in Texas and at one in California. Page 4 m- VOTE MICHAEL MURPHY for CITY COUNCIL Dear Sachse Citizens: I want to take this opportunity to write you a personal letter. During the course of my campaign I have had the privilege of meeting and talking with many of you and I'm learning more about the wishes of the citizens of Sachse with each visit. I have found there are many things we all want: a nice country-type community in which to live and raise our families, low taxes so we can afford to raise our families, and to control our water and sewer rates, to name a few. I believe with the right planning and management these things can and will be accomplished. As the election draws near and you visit with the candidates, seek out their opinions on the impor- tant issues facing the city. Beware of partisan campaign rhetoric and inferences that because some candidates are employed at the same company they cannot make independent and objective deci- sions. As you consider the candidates, let me assure you that I will conti...

Page 5 RE-ELECT HOLDEN MAYOR In the past few weeks through my door-to-door campaign and ads in The Sentinel, I've discussed improvements in our city services, such as the many streets to be reconstructed between May and September ... the 750,000-gallon water tower to be completed in about ten months . . . more equipment for the police and fire departments ... the new "impact" fee that will greatly aid construction of concrete thoroughfare streets . . . and much more. Consistent upgrading of city services is critical to our growth years ahead and I will continue to be aggressive in working to provide the best services essential to the citizens. But I believe a responsive City government should also provide the non-essential services for its residents. Sachse is certainly not a rich city, but we have the funds and proper budgeting procedures to do more than ever before to enhance our citizens' day-to-day quality of life. My overall goal on the Council and as Mayor has been to give res...

The State Highway and Public Transportation Commission awarded a $1,180,130.62 contract to Clark Construction Co., Inc., of San Antonio for the project in the four counties. "Resurfacing will improve the driving characteristics of the roads by providing better traction for vehicles," said Miriam Grayson, assistant public affairs officer for the department's Dallas district. The project is part of a state- wide seal-coat program, a pre- ventive measure that reduces cost of repairs and preserves the road system. The work is ex- pected to take 50 working days.
