COLUMNS CarOUSelby Carrie Ballenger elastic wrist bands. Sentimentalism is defined as having or show- ing tender gentle feelings sometimes in a weak or foolish way. I guess I've always been a bit sentimental. Anyone that walks into my room walks into an oversized scrapbook. My walls are coverd with candy wrappers from first dates and tear-stained handkerchiefs from last dates. I have wedding napkins complete with dried cake pinned to my bulletin board along with my first pair of shoes and receipts from the first time I paid club dues. There are countless name tags from church camps gone by and school spirit buttons from my Junior high days. I just can't bear to part with anything. It's not rare for someone to open a book and have a pressed dried and virtually unrecognizable flower slide into his lap. I even managed to "successfully" press a wrist cor- sage complete with plastic pine cones and As I round the last stretch of my college days I seem to gush with teary remembrances and c...

Bridges integrates Christianity with liberal arts education By Cheryl Anthony "We are happiest when we do for others what we do best" says Dr. Julian Bridges. And what he does best is to commit himself wholly to ser- ving in the classroom community and church. A man of many Interests Bridges believes "being a Christian means you are going to have high standards." He applies those standards to teaching sociology serving on the Abilene City Council and pastoring churches on an interim basis. "You ought to be Involved" he says. He models after Christ who prayed shortly before his death that Christians would be safe In the world though not of the world. By the time a student graduates from a Chris- tian college his values should be solid enough to stand in society he said. "But hopefully we will influence society." Christians have tended to view politics as "dirty" Bridges says and hesitated to venture outside the safety of the church. Though all Christians need a source of refuge to "r...

If you prefer your mysteries a lit- tle less mysterious your humor on the satirical side your characters eccentric your music well- polished and your actors equally as impressive then the musical murder mystery Something's Afoot is one you won't want to miss. Produced by the department of communication and theatre in association with the School of Music Something's Afoot is a classy very professional produc- tion. COLUMNS -. v -' I hate it when people play mind games with me. it just burns me up to have a person waste my time with shallow gestures of friendship or with fronts that hide his or her true person. I hate it. I am not a toy and I don't like to be played with. I would much rather cut through all of the superficiality fostered by playing mind games and get down to the business of making friends with people. I really don't have time to play games with them. It's that simple. So when a person plays mind games with me I have to wonder about the "friendship" that ex- ists between the two of us. If he or she can't share a basic honest relationship with me then we aren't friends: we are mere acquaintances. This past year I worked at a job that helped shape my thinking in this area. Buckner Children's Home in Dallas needed someone to be a father to seven boys ages 5-12 and they hired me for the position. I lived with these children ate with them and put them to bed at night. I taught them m...
