EARLY CLOSING. (THE EDITOR "WESTERN CHAMPION,") [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 7 January 1898

THE EDITOR " WESTERN CHAMPION,-''} Sir,—It is with pleasure I notice tha^t Mr. Price has found " Discretion the better part of valor" and has an nounced his intention of closing his store at six o'clock. He has now re* moved a refuge for' other storekeepers. How many of them, now their tower of refuge is destroyed, will come forward and follow his example ? The em^ ployees must not consider their bactlo won. There are • severai business people who are still aliens to the early closing principle, some of whom an nounce they are only here for a short time (until they clear their stock). I ; would strongly advise those persons to conform to the early closing system and , close at 6 p.m., failing that, the em-> ployees engage in a system of picket ing, and thereby to a large extent prevent the residents from doing business with those shops after six. It is to be hoped this unpleasant course will be averted by an unanimous determination to close at six o'clock. Thanking you for the us...

By the v?ay, Only a few days since the obituary notice of Mr. J. J. He it was who claimed to be the first, discoverer of gold in New South Wales. He had left amongst his papers an official document signed by Thomas Mitchell, (in answer to his request for Government aid in opening up the gold trade), telling bim we are a pastoral community who do not ...
