Our Brisbane Letter. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 21 February 1884

. Oar BrbHane Letter. (noa oom «im OOKEESFOOTE^T.) We are still knocking along over politics. In the Assembly thc Oppo- sition have made a determined stand, and, in so far as the future business of the session is concerned, have dictated very much their own terms to the     Government. On Wednesday Mr.         Morehead, as leader pf the Opposition, gave the Premier clearly to understand that in consequence of the peculiar   conditions under which Parliament met there would be no further business allowed by his party except the passage   of the Chinese and Kanaka Bills and   the timates. This, the Premier seems inclined to agree with, and for Tuesday next the orders of the day taking pre cedence are the measures referred to. There is one other measure which     may be acceptable to the Opposition, and that is the Federal Council Bill. This mea...

The Cairns Post. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1884. The Weather. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 21 February 1884

THE CAIRNS POST THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1884   The Weather.   Since our last issue there has been a marked change in the weather, and the long looked for wet season is at last upon us in earnest. The previous week had been wet and had given signs of a break, but it was not until Friday night that the change was confirmed. On that day the weather was very stormy. A south easterly gale accompanied by very heavy rain, blew with scarcely an inter- mission during the whole day, the rainfall from 7.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. being three and a quarter inches; and for the 24 hours six and three-quarter inches. On Saturday the gale abated somewhat, but heavy rain squalls were frequent and the rainsall registered 2.10in. Since then the   rainfall has not been heavy but there is every indication of more to come.         —The first effects of the heavy rain on Fri- day was to cause rise of some six feet in the Barr...

THE COOKTOWN COURIER of last Saturday's date contains the following with regard to the commencement of the railway.   Mr. Edward Corr, Mr. Bashford's manager   for the railway construction [?] arrived by the Maranoa yesterday. Mr. Corr intends   to reside in Cooktown during the progress of the work, Mrs. Corr and family having   accompanied him. It was a mistake that Mr.     Bashford and family were coming up, the telegram arriving here in a mutilated form, but the contractor is on the way to Cooktown, and may be expected in a fortnight's time. The Maranoa and [?] both brought up some [?] odd men to work on the construction, and work will begin on Monday morning next for certain, the commencement being some three miles out of town; so that next   week there will be a regular [?] popula- tion in the surroundings.
