SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 16 July 1825

SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.     Arrived, on Thursday last, the ship Mary Hope, Captain Farmer ; - from Rio Janeiro, 18th April, and Cape of Good Hope, 27th May. Passengers. - Cabin - A. Clark, Esq. Supercargo ; A. M. Ritchie, Esq. of Cal cutta. Seerage - two. - Cargo -41 cases, and 983 bags sugar ; 187 rolls tobacco ; 150 bags coffee ; 136 pipes, 20 half pipes, 16 barrels, and 14 hogsheads wine, 200 barrels flour. It is with much satisfaction we call the attention of our Readers to the libe- rality of Government, in lowering the rates of duty on tobacco, spirits, and foreign merchandise. The impost on the first-named article is now only one shil ling per pound, instead of four. This reduction may affect, for a time, the growth of the plant in these Colonies ; but it will be attended with the beneficial result of relieving the honest trader, without injuring the revenue. Smug- gling will now, in a great degree, if not entirely, be suppressed, and the consump- tio...

THE HOBART TOWN GAZETTE. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 23 July 1825

THE HOBART TOWN GAZETTE. Assize of Bread for the ensuing Week The Loaf of Two Pounds - 7½d. Sitting Magistrate for the ensuing Week, AFFLECK MOODIE, Esquire. WE have had some opportunity, in the course of the survey which we have lately taken, to form an estimate of the general feeling of the country. We have found the interior thickly overspread with settlers of the highest character, displaying an active spirit of enthusiasm, not only in improving their landed property, but, in many instances in adding to its rural ornament. Their ear nest application has left them little leisure to enter the field of politics, beyond a warm attachment to the Constitution - a respect for the local Government - and a firm reliance on the judgment and proptiety of its mea- sures. They have been anxious to shew them- selves, what they really are, such members of society as will insensibly, by their influence and example, promote social order, and ulti- mately lay the foundation, and form the ma- teri...
