MANY NEVER SUSPECT SMSE OF BAGKMES This Old Treatment Often Brings Happy Relief It is surprising how quickly many sufferers relieve nagging backache once they discover that the real cause of their trouble - may be clogged kidneys. Your kidneys contain 15 miles of tiny tubes or filters which strain the waste and acids from the blood. ? A^healthy person should pass 3. pints a day and so. get rid of 3 pounds of waste matter. . . If your kidneys don't work well, this waste stays in the/ body and may become poisonous causing nag ging backaches, leg pains, loss of v pep and energy, getting up nights, lumbago, swollen feet and ankles, pufflness under tho eyes, rheumatic pains and dizzine?s. Frequent or scanty ? passages ' with smarting and burning are .further evidence that something is wrong .with the kidneys or bladder. Don't wait! Ask your chemist ? or store for DOAN'S BACKACHE «DNEY PILLS . . . used success y the world over by millions of pie suffering with -backache and er kidney diso...

Preservation Of Vegetables By Waxing INTERESTING AMERICAN EXPERIMENTS [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner Wodonga Express and Riverina Stock Journal — 3 January 1941

'Preservation Of Vegetables 'By Waxing INTERESTING AMERICAN EXPERIMENTS A thin film of natural or artificial wax on the surface of plant tissue has long been known to be effective in reducing^ the rate of water loss, and commercial processes liave been de veloped which take advantage of this fact. In the citrus industry, for ex ample, over 75 per cent, of the oranges grown in California .and Florida are now treated in this way. Investigations are now being made in . America with a view to extending the' process to vegetables, where these have to be stored for some time be fore sale.- The method which appears to be most promising is a dipping pro cess, which can be carried out by hand or 'by mechanical equipment. The vegetables are first washed and then, without drying, are dipped momentarily into a wax emulsion at room tempera ture and dried thoroughly, the thick ness of the: resulting dry film varying from ono to two microns (a micron equals 1/1,000 millimetre). THE MOTORING WORLD News and Notes From the N.R.M.A. Petrol Rationing [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner Wodonga Express and Riverina Stock Journal — 3 January 1941

? ? -THE - ? ? ? MOTORING WORLD News and Notes From the N.R.M.A. t Petrol Rationing 1 Information received . by the N/R.M.A. from many quarters, parti cularly resellers and distributing com panies, indicates that tlie consumption of petrol lias dropped to a far greater degree than was originally asked for by the Federal Government. This was the statement of tlie general secretary of the association (Mr. H. I. Johnson) -jn answer to the usual crop of rumors re.£rardiner rationing. ' Altliouo-lr in nuAdj^nis instances we see evidence of 'extm|grgance .and .waste,' said Mr. Johftson, 'it is foolish to pretend that tli'e vast majority of commercial arid private motorists have not reduced their consumption very considerably since rationing c-onimenced. There is hardly a man you meet who is not running far less 'mileage than, before. It is indeed difficult to reconcile fcnown facts with the specious statements of rumor-mongers. 'Of course we must remember .that large stocks of petrol wer?...

A NEW YEAR GREETING from Barbara [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner Wodonga Express and Riverina Stock Journal — 3 January 1941

A. NEW YEAR GREETING [?] J^EAR READERS, — As this letter goes to press the old year is fading. Its last hours ticking away. Once again 'The Old steps aside to make way for the New,' and one, cannot help looking back to all that 1940 has given us. 'It has been a harsh unlovely year with its war anfi consequent partings, sorrows, horrors and strife.' That is * . the first thought, but there is much to make us happy when we remember 1940. It was during the strife and suffer ing thrust upon our Empire that we ?were privileged to see the unity, the concord of that Empire. We have found, the bond which holds lis all together in a. fellowship which we never dreamed in our days of peace. We have seen the readiness with which our people have worked together ' to help our common cause and each of us, looking back, have so much to thrill us with pride. We cannot feel too mu oh regret wh'c-n we realise the achievement of this wonderful' coun try during 1940. We liave built aero planes, armament...

There is a vast difference between what the famous fashion designers present as the 'Vogue' for the season, and what is actually worn — and women are generally at their best on holidays. They wear the clothes which appeal to them, and that is usually the type which suits them best. During the work a-day round they are somewhat restricted by . pressure of duty; What is the 'best' thing to wear for the occasion, and what the other women will wear. But in carefree holidays there is a casual attitude which i influences even the more formal gatherings, and that is why | we see the popular styles — -the fashions which really appeal .—during holidays.
