WEATHER VAGARIES. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 25 January 1899

WEATUKtt VAGARIES. i Under these fervid conditions strange things bscoine possible. Bush tires break out on tli<* slight est provocation. Tim slty is suiear <ed with columns of drifting smoke ; the earth is red with running llatiie. Dust-storms, such as are bred mi the scorched flour of the .Sahara, rise and sweep over whole prov iuces, blotting out the very sun above the gasping village and home steads. The Kiverina breeds a ] particulnrly distressing variety of dust-sioriu known as "Darling showers." THE DROUGHT CALCULATION. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 25 January 1899

THE DROUGHT CALCULA TION. Thh "Review of Reviews" says :— What the drought of the* last few years has cost N.S.W. has been cs- j timated, and the estimate makes up i a bit of very doleful arithmetic, j The flocks of the colony h«w shrunk from GC.000,000 to 40,000,000, re pLdaentinjj a loss of about 20,000, 000 sheep. If to this is added tlin loss of natural iucrease the shrink age amounts to 50.000,000 sheep ; enough, that is, to cijuip a consider, able sized colony. In addition, there has been u loss of a lar^e puiuoer of liorses and 150,000 head of cattle. That the colony has been able to survive these tcrrilie losses is a striking proof of energy and resource.

GAMBLING IN MELBOURNE. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 25 January 1899

GAMBLING IN MELBOURNE.j A CURJors illustration of the strength of tint passiun, mid of tlin craft and resolution with which it tights. the liiw, is supplied by the tote-shops of M<-1 . bourne.
