WHROO. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 21 May 1863

WHROO. (From our o?on. Correspondent.) Quartz mining is in' a decidedly feebli state of health at present , but we are consoled in the belief that our sick man iis on the ev of a recovery to more than his usual stiength and vigour. The apathetic are awakening to the importance of our metallic lodes. Anitimniony is found in an abundance that would create quite a. furore in its locale par excellence--Cos terfield-so I am informed by a gentle; mnan of extensive mining experiende, and who is acquainted with the minutest: de tail of that gold-field. It is even mooted-in the Argus-that we can boast of silver in :the 'list of our products. °I am fain to believe, hioever, that as yet there is nothing to substantiate the statement, and that the report has its origin in-an' old mis-print of 'yoir' con temporary, the Mclvor Neios-quicdtsilver having been.substituted for qiicAksand:iit the Whroo correspondence.: The question of silver or no silver once afloa',i Mr J. (To the Editor of the Mclvor Times.) Sir,-Having been for many years a great advocate for Mechanics Institutions,'well knowing the. beneficial: eteots botlrmoral and social they have a; -tendency exert upon all classes of a community, more especially in isolated districts, ? I deem it my duty to pay a'word about our Heathcote Mechanics' Institute. In the first place, I regrt f 'observe that there is so much apparent ipathy exhibited by therespectable portion of the residents'of this township generally for the welfare of the above Institute; secondly, I consider the committee highly culpable in allowing the place to be closed so frequently, and for so many hours during the time stated in the. Rules of the Institute; one clause of which says that the institution shall be open from 10 a.m.,to 10 p.m. Now, Sir, being a subscriber, I think I ought to gain admission at any time, or at least sometimes during the week ; but I seldom pass the institution but the doors are closed.
