An Unscrupulous Foe. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 January 1891

An Unscrupulous Foe. Creeps upon us unawares like, an assaBsiu iu the dark and whose dangerous proximity we never suspect until it makes the laet fatal clutch on some vital organ. We are always warned in ample time of the impending danger, but with criminal carelessness neglect those wnrnings. That tired foeliug, those aching limbs, and that grand feeling one day andseedy condition the nex*-, the bout taste on waking in a morning, and the frequent siok and splitting hendachos, all make their debut before serious illness sets in. All or any of these symptoms indicate the approach of disease, they are faithful signs that the liver and kidneys are not doing their duties, that the morbid and effete matter instead of being eliminated from the system, is being retained, and ia positively poiteining and destroying the whole physical structure. Neglect in Buch case* , - is criminal, recourse to rational treatment '+ should be had at once, Clements Tonic / should be taken to strengthen the d...

Heredity of Crime CURIOUS PHASES AND THE DIRE FUL RESULTS OF INHERITED DISEASE. Doubtless crime is committed from the mere love ot it. The identity of ' Jack the Ripper ' remains undiscovered, and so we do not know what impelled him to the commission of his atrocious crimes. Little doubt he was insane, his actions controlled by an abnormal condition of the mind ; it is plain none of the ordinary reasons for crime prevailed in this case. He was perhaps, a victim of some hero ditary taint, which drove him to acts agaiiiBt which his will revolted, and from which in his rational moments his soul recoiled in horror. A French novelist of realism makes the hero of a late novel of such a character. He was a locomotive engineer, a thoroughly competent and reliable man ; but if he chanced to behold seized him ; he could not control a desire to plunge a knife in it. He was aware of his infirmity, fought it with stubborn will, denied himself the society of women, and for years controlled himsel...

Sporting SHOALHAVEN UNITED TURF CLUB. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 January 1891

Sporting1. SHOALHAYEtf UNITED TURF CLUB. The abovenomed dab conducted a successful little* meeting at Numba on Wednesday last, when five events were decided without a hitch in the presence of someUOO persons, which attendance was considered very good as coming so soon after the general holidays and the re-union of the Boolong Club. The absence of any fresh horses in the engagements tended somewhat to cause a lack of interest on the part of a number of local- sportsmen, and it is well-known that the annual prize meeting of the Nowra Reserve Rifle Club held the same day prevented many persons from attending the races. It is hoped that in future the meetings of these clubs will not be allowed to clash, as they each lose much thereby. However, notwith standing the failings stated, the picnic race meeting of Wednesday must be entered ' a success.' The club officials and stewards as usual worked syste matically and with good humour, Mr. Alex. Pollock oSciiting as starter, Mr. Hugh F'K^nsi...

Mr Egeson's Weather Almanac. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 January 1891

Mr- Bgesoa's Weather Almanac. A complete and interesting weather almanac, compiled by the well-known and far-famed meteorologist, Mr. Egeson, has just been issued. The work, in addition to giving chronologi cal information, treats of various mat ters that are both important and highly interesting. His ideas are largely based on actual facts, and not mere conjecture. PcrhaDS one of the most important matters dealt with is that relating to Mr. Russell and the Sydney Observatory. Some time ago it was announced that Mr. Russell had dis covered another solar system in the Magellan clouds by means of pho tography. Respecting this alleged discovery, Mr. Egeson hints that there is little in it, and quotes statements from the committee on solar physics in London respecting Mr. Russell's photo graphs of the sun's spots, which state : — ' iliese photographs have only one cross wire and are unvarnished. ' The cross-wire is out of focus, and the limb is ill-detined in every case.' The specificat...

WE CAN ONLY SAY THAT HIS INITIALS ARE "J.D." [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 January 1891

WE CAN ONLY SAY THAT HIS INITIALS ARE 'J.D.' When a woman travels ten miles merely to ask a few questions we may assume that her curiosity is excited. Iu tho year 1883, a Btory went forth from Loverstock Green, Hcinel Hemp stead, Herts, which nroused great interest in all tho region thereabout. People came lroiu various directions to inquire into the mutter ; what was alleged to havo occurred had to do mostly with one man. If the story turned out to be true some good was likely to come of it ; if fake, it would only put the community more on their guard, against nil kinds of wild rumours. Among the women who were bound to got at the foundation of it was one from St. Albans and a cook from Langley. How strangely things work out in this queer world. Seveu yean have passed and tho facts are now to become generally public for the first time. It appears that about the first of January, 1883, an old resident of the placo above named was said, and commonly believed, to bo in a dying condit...
