Church Radio MOVE FOR IMPROVEMENT [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 3 November 1928

Church Radio MOVE FOR IMPROVEMENT Have the churches kept abreast of the advances in radio broadcasting? There is a feeling in radio circles i hut they have not. In every other branch of broadcast ing notable improvements have been made. The modern studio from which the irojrammes of entertainment are radiated has been altered from a heav ily draped apartment intended to be absolutely soundproof to a modern open-air room with walls and ceiling constructed of materials which simply absorb sounds and prevent echoes. Ar tists who had good platform or stage voices have learned how to sing in o the microphone. They have acquired the technique of broadcasting so that notes which are not easily transmitted go over the air properly. Orchestras and choirs have learned how to group round the microphone so that the value of each instrument or voice is gath ered in and sent over the air to list oners. But the church services broadcas today are in essentials the same J those broadcast four years ...

THE GARDEN DAHLIAS. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 3 November 1928

THE GARDEN DAHLIAS. The present is a good time to start some of the old stools into growth previous to dividing. Some people cut off the tubers and plant them like potatoes. This is all wrong. Take the clumps to a disused sunny corner of the yard and place on top of the ground. Cover with sandy noil just about one inch over the top of tubers, giving some water so us to settle the earth around them. After about a week or ten days (if the weather is warm) the young shoots will appear above the ground. The dividing may then, be carried out. Cut in such a way as will leave each shoot attached to the tuber. Even a piece of tuber will do pro vided the shoot or eye is attached. Dahlias thrive on any well drained soil but are fond of a rich, fairly still loam. No new manure must touch the newly planted tubers or decay will at once set in and ruin the plant. Drive a stout stake six feet long into the soil where each plant is to j)e placed, (about three of feet apart about right). The shoot s...

FASHION TO-DAY WIDER SKIRTS THE MODE BARBARA WINSLOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 3 November 1928

FASHION TO-DAY WIDER SKIRTS THE MODE BARBARA WINSLOW. Here is a new material-moire chiffon! This formal frock makes the most of its fabric, accenting its loveliners with a touch of head embroidery at the wrists. A matching ornament holds the huge bow in place. The neck treatment, is possible only with a soft fabric. The wider skirt is not new, but the version of it that will be seen during the coming season differs entirely from models of the past seasons. Many phases have been seen in the changes from pencil-like straightness to lines that are not unlike an in verted flower in the conforming of the hipline and the flared width be low it. This means that smartness demands that the fulness developes below' the fitted line. We have had the tight hij) for several seasons, but now it is a fundamental of the correct silhou ette. Many things contribute to the new fulness. Among them are pleat's, tiers, flounces, and circular pieces of the material. They are applied in a number of ways, th...

A Fine Achievement [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 10 November 1928

A Fine Achievement When the #nm bf Fairfield and district make up their mind* to do anything, dipcultiu are »vriftly cut aside, and this bat been demonstrat ed by the Fairfield and District Choral Society in no uncertain man ner. Just over twelve months ago a few citizens met to try and establish the F. and D. Choral Society. No prac tice room was available, they pos sessed no music, but they went ahead with the proposition. To-day the F. and D C. S. has its own piano practically paid for, possesses a fine library of music, has a membership roll of 48 performing and 60 subscribing members, and on November 22 is producing in the Crescent Theatre what promises to be the finest concert ever given in Fairfield. Not only are the assisting artists of a class seldom persuaded even by big fees to come into the suburbs but the items by the seciety includo some numbers that should be worth joing a long way to hear. Look up the programme, which is published in our advt. columns of this edition...
