The Fourth Class. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 6 January 1900

The Fourth Glass. But here, in the domination of the fourth class comes to light this immense, difference that the. fourth class is the last, the outside of all, the disinterested class of the community, which sets up and can Bet up no further exclusive con dition, either legal or actual, neither nobility nor landed possessions nor the possession of capital, which- it could -make into a new privilege and force upon the arrangements of society. We are all workingmen in so far we have even the will to make ourselves useful in any way to the community. ' The fourth class in whose heart therefore no germ of a new privilege is contained, is for this very reason synonomous with the whole human race. Its interest in truth is the interest of the whole humanity, its freedom is tbe free dom of humanity itBelf and its domination is the domination of all. Whoever, therefore, invokes the idea of the working class as the ruling principle of society in the sense in which I have explained it to you...

THE CURSE OF SCIENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 6 January 1900

THB CURSE ©F SCIBiSE. Not very long ago some fybian or another — Mr.. Sidney. Webb I ' think' it was— told us there waireveryreaaoto to believe thst the n^~peittury.*wild prove leSs fertil^in inventioii Cbtul the one which mankind has just passed through. This prediction -wee in direct opposition, to the ?views and teaching of all the lead ing scientific men of the day, but it was nevertheless, as the baBis of an argument. Now, it is already beginning to be clear to all the world that the inventions and discoveries of the nineteenth century will look insignificant indeed beside what the twentieth century has in store for the race. We are manifestly on the thresh hold of the greatest advance in tbe power of man over nature that has not yet been witnessed. In every direction. — in electricity, in chemistry, in mechanics, in the application, of heat and cold progress is so rapid that the very best handbooks of ten years ago on these subjects have to be almost re-written to-day. We are ...

"Neither Seen Nor Heard." [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 13 January 1900

' Neither Seen Nor Heard.' To nail this lie at once, we lift thj following from Hansard:— Tho Hon. Dr. Pnllen said he desired to move : That the words 'nor. for more than sixty honrs in any week,' lines 6, and 7, be omitted. This amendment would have placed a very large number oat side the operation of the Act alto gether. A very long discussion ensued, during which the Hon. B. Backhouse said such a large class would be excluded by this bill that it would be cruel if some provision of the kind proposed by the Government were not intro duced. This was absolnte'y a bill rest'icting the honrs of labor, and that object w^is achieved very suc cessfully, in some cases, by daring the shops at a certain hou* ; but we left out a very large section of the working community, and if we were not going to legislate for them, it would be extremely hard acd unfair. This bugbear as to the reduction of wages had been t'otted ont; but you could not take the breeks oft a Highlandman, and yon could not ...

. HUGHES, M.P. Under Cover of. a Nom de Plume. 'Vilifies Men Straigbtar than Himself. Thos* people in Sydney who read the Queensland Worker Lave recognised that the Sydney letter, by ' Omega, ' appearing therein, and contributed by Mr. Wil iam Morris Hughes, ' Labor Member for Lang I'ivision, ' was contri buted for two objects— laudation of W. M. Hughes, M.P., and his ' pals,' and condemnation of 'those who did not accept Mr. Hughes' ideas of bow the labor movement should be run. 1 his lias never troubled The People until the issue of December 9th was brought „ under notice, in which appears a lying and. abusive statement with regard to the Hop Benjamin Backhouse, M. L.C. This would probably have escaped notice entirely if one or two copies had not beeen posted in Sydney to -certain people, who, it was thought, would be interested The addresses on these papers were written in a disguised hand. A Municipal Family Home. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 13 January 1900

A Municipal Family ? ?v'H©,We;:' * ? '? My brother's keeper ' is fast becoming recognised as an expres sion of municipal duty We do not rea'ise how tar we have gone along tLe wav towards looking after eafh other on family prin ciules. But the Municipal Family IIoi..e of G asyovv serves as a very plain indication of progress ac chieved beyond the knowledge of the great majority of peop e. In OlaB^ow the Corporation Fainiy Home ia designed for widows or widowers with very youni.' children. These partly 0 phaned chi'dren are often in a most helpless condition in towns where no provision is made. While the father or mother is awiy all day at work the child, ren are neglected ; they run about the streets, como into touch with va'ious kinds of immorality, and it is no wouder that many ot them swell the ranks of the most vicious and criminal class and become sources of tho greatest danger to society. AMERICA. The November Elections. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 13 January 1900

AMERICA. The November Elections. The Sydnoy daily Press in their American letters dealing with the elections have no word of mention of the party which has achieved a greater victory than all others. They have pointed out that the year is an ' off ' vear. bnt few Rtaies havinc elections taking place, and that, as is usual, a very light vote took place. Beyond this, they are not interested, except as the elections favored M'Kinley's 6 r Bryan's chances for the Presidency. They refuse to notice that there exists other parties than the Republi cans or Democrats ; yet all the time with giant .strides the American Socialist ' Labor Party marches on. This party before it can arrive even to place in State affairs, we know must make enormous increases in the vote, but it is an ever increasing vote, and when with a light vote, the party not only increases its per centage of the vote cast in every state it contests, but in many cases polls more votes than ever it did before, although the vote...
