SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 24 December 1851

SYDNEY. You will ? re, by the papers of this rhy, that Mr Hill las been returned as M3avor, for the year 1852, by majority unprecedented in election eLrm annals. Yon r wr that a question is pending as to the validity of the election of the three lately elected AIermen on the ground that the las had made no provision for the ap pointmentof a person to fill the officeof return i:n olcerin place of the mayor under existing circamstances. Now, shoal1 it turn iut that the election of the allermen should be pronounced illegal, may not such an opinion tend to vitiate the election of the maor, inasmuch as the al dermen then elected were supposed to preside at the polling-placas in certain wards, at the election of the mayor, which election, should it be nsetaide, wovld, according to the act, eon tin?e the present mayor, Mr Thurlew, in offce for another year. I trst, however, it will be ruled by the judges that the appointment of Mr Lae, was, under the circumstances, perfectly legal A messae...

OUPHnI DEcEsee 10,--We hvo had very unsettled weather here for some time past, the mornings and evenings chilly, the mid-days oppressively hot, with plagues of fies; and now and then a therdersteorm. Such isate great annoyance of the legon offiies in this part of the country that it i iimpossible to go oatof doors to work without a rel, or to write within; The drawing nigh of Chriltmas, and the rawted richness of newly-discovered gold Icen li:res, has hadthe efflct of slightly thinning our numbers; liut nerertheless ecrcelv a week passes but we observe new faces, taking out li censes to die in our rich creeks. T;u Christmas of 1851 will be long remembered by the present denizens of 'Victoria, not from any peculiarity in the style of its celebration, but from the col lateral events with which it is associated, and which constitute it an era in colonial history. Those events not only affect ourselves, but are at this time forming the topic of interest to a large section of the civilised world. What changes will be produced in the family circles of Great B3ritain by the news of our wonderful resources! What a vast field of enterprise and employment is opened up for the cast-down strugglers of the old world! What a lever we have in our hands for the movement of the world, for good or evil, according as we wield it! What a gloriods future for the reign of our beloved Queen, when she shall send a worthy representative who shall know how to treat her subjects as men capable of managing their own affairs. These are, indeed, times, big with events. Who can venture to foretell the progress of Vieto...

LATEST FROM ENGLAND. (From the Melbourne Herald.) BY the arrival of the Eagle, last evening, from Liverpool, we have received London and Liver pool papers to the dav ofher sailing, the ISth September, being ten days later than our previ ons advices. The most important news ther contain as affeeting the Australian Colonies is the laying on of a line of Screw Steamers br the Admiralty, which, though from the terms of the oeiial noti Sfcatios is not all that could be desired. is never theless astep in the right direction, which will be very quickly followed up, if not by the Govern ment, ateastby the people of England, or some other power. The Queen was well, and still in the High lands; she was to honor Liverpool with a visit on her return to London. The following latest quotations of the money market are from the Times, 18th Sept. Wednusdas evening. The English funds opened this morning with symptoms of further improvement, but they were not maintained throughout the day. Consols, wh...

SYDNEY GOLD CIRCULAR. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 26 December 1851

SYDNEY (] ')LD) CIRCULLR. By thei V imenr, wq bear thna intelligence of oar gold discnrery hd reached England on- the 2&th Augnot by the rertand mail via 5omth amnpton. Captain Blloomfle, of the Mnazep.a, which left Sydney on the o0th 3M1:v, rad reached Mladras on t:o 15th July, had addressed Messrs. Dunbar.and Sons from that port, stating that gold had been discovered in the district of Bathurst-that hundreds were off to the dig ging, and that goods were rising in conse quence. Two other parties were in pssession of the news--in all probability from the same souree; and one of them proposed to send it to the Times for £200. It does not appear that any.parties were in receipt-of letters from their correspondents in Sydney, and from inquiries' made of the owners of the Mszeppa, we are in formed that she only took one letter for London, which letter had not reached its destination when the Vimiera sailed. It is not likely that this intelligence will be confirmed in London unti...
