LOCAL ITEIMS. TIE annual picnic of the auctioneers, and estate agents of Melbourne took place last. Friday at Schnapper Point:! and was attehdediby ,about 500 ex ' cursionists.- The pait3y1ere conve'yed' to the scene by, the'steanier Couriei,, which left, Melbourne at' 10 o'clock, and landed'her passengers in' good time. Lunchoon, which was excell-: ently provided by M?r. H. Skinner,. was partaken of. iiuia large marquee which was .erected in the municipal reserve. The remainder of the day.. was pleasantly spent in getting through a programme of athletic sports tugs of war, and playing cricket, sides being chosen from the east and west portions of the city, the game resulting in a draw. A numerously attended meeting of the residents.of the Shire of Malvern was held last Tuesday evening in the Shire Hall, for the purpose of consider. ing the question of site for the proposed new post and.telegraph effices for the dis trict. Mrs. Keniiedy of Feri Tree Gully road charged a laboring man named Frank Hocking with having committed an unlawful assault upon her :or the 29th. of last month. He was also charged by. the daughter of the com plaint Margaret Jane Kennedy with -a similar offence. Mr. F. Stephens juur appeared for the defence. Mrs. Kennedy deposed that accused came to her house on Tuesday afternoon the 29th. ult. pushed open the door, 'went and sat down on her daughter's knee and put his arm round her neck.
