Tree Planting at Canberra SCOTLAND'S ROWAN TREE. This Scottish soil-in which we plant our tree, An emblem of Auld Scotia ower the sea, Wha's berries red, to Scotsmen aye will be, A glint o' hame; Will bring remembrance a' oor Ain Countrie, Frae whence we came.   And as the years pass ower this new-born State, This bit o' Scottish soil laid at her gate, Will aye denote that Scots wha ne'er abate Their love for hame, Still proudly strive to guide Australia's fate To world-wide fame. The above verses were composed by the   Secretary of the Highland Society of New South Wales (Mr. J. D. Robertson) and read on the occasion of the planting of the Society's rowan tree by Mr. J. M. Pringle, Senior Life vice-President. No ceremony in connection with the tree planting by public bodies has been so inter- esting or spectacular as that carried out by the President (Mr. Duncan Carson), Mr. Jas. M. Pringle (vice-president), Mr. W. B. Car- michael and Mr. S. J. Carruthers ...

CANBERRA CRICKET BATS. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 16 November 1926

CANBERRA CRICKET BATS. Á quarter of a century, hence the Austra- lian International Test Cricket Oval will un- doubtedly be at Canberra. The first of the series, no doubt, will be played at Sydney and Melbourne, but the final convincing ground will be Canberra Oval. Mr. E. N. Ward, Curator of Sydney Bo- tanical Gardens, has just returned from a visit to Britain, and during his stay there col- lected 500 specially selected trees and plants, the majority "cricket bat willows" for Aus- tralian cricket bats. These are to be planted at Canberra. These trees will not be the first willows from which cricket bats will be made at Canberra. Many bats have been made ia past and recent years by local enthusiasts, from the willows fringing the course of the Molonglo River which lend beauty to our Fédérai Capital as it wends its serpentine way through, what will be, the heart of the capital of Australia.

The Knight of Clovelly. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 16 November 1926

The Knight of Clovelly. SIR JOHN ROBERTSON, KMM.Gr. [Further reminiscences from the pen of Mr. Victor Cohen, which, last month, recorded some episodes in the life of Sir Henry Parkes, are given this month concerning another giant of that generation.] Like Autolycus, some recorders do, at times, snap up unconsidered trifles, and in the doing of it, often miss some pearls. In this review of Sir John Robertson's peculiarities, an endeavor is made to dig up some of his humor-and there were periods in his serious life when the lighter vein was uppermost. It would not be out of place, however, to start off by recounting the history of a spot Sir John was partial to "spots;" his partiality extended to some very useful spots, though the largest in his "sun" was the N.S.W. National Park; a sanctuary for all animal and vegetable life, indigenous to the State. Unlike many other parks, it does not bear the originator's name. Yet Sir John was wholly and solely responsible for its conception and ...

THE DROVERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 16 November 1926

THE DROVERS. By "Yarrum." "Possibly the first to be killed were two drovers. Poor chaps-they had been playing cards in the caboose at the end of the goods train, they were unrecognisable when picked up."-Extract from description of the recent Murulla railway catastrophe* * * * * "In the caboose at the end of the goods train/' Whoever reported this item told it graphically. "Caboose" aptly conveys to the reader the rough vehicle the railway authori- ties provide for men who are tn charge of stock. Unless sufficient stock are going forward to make up what is termed "a stock train" the trucks go forward in goods train, and pro- vision is made in a rough hard seated, dim lighted box carriage, termed by drovers "a caboose/' for those in charge of the stock. The city dweller will ask, Why have drovers v?hen stock are going by train? The answer is that the careful drover saves thousands of pounds a year to stock owners. The days have gone when a "swaggie," down and out, wishing to get out ...

Almost the entire Federal Cabinet and many State Ministers gathered in the new Parliament building after an inspection of Canberra in the brilliant morning sunshine for the presentation of the Speaker's Chair. This was a gift from the members of the Em- pire Parliamentary Association in the House of Lords and House of Commons, and the Marquis of Salisbury, leader of the Empire Parliamentary Delegation, made the presen tatioii.
