OAKLEIGH POLICE COURT. Saturday, 13th January. Before W. Templeton P.M.W.R. Looker and John Jorden J.P. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 17 January 1877

OAKLEIGH POLICE COURT. Saturday; 13th January. Before W. Templeton P.M, W. R. Looker and John Jordon J.P. W. R. Ross, of the Hunting Tower Hotel, Fern Tree Gully, proceeded against a free selector of the name of Michael Kennedy, for uttering counterfeit coin. It appears that Michael was spending his Xmas at the above hostelry, and after getting into a maudlin state, pulled out his purse to pay for his last pint, when out rolled an exhibi- tion gilt coin of the size of a sovereign. This was eventually taken by Ross as a half sovereign and change given along with a bottle of brandy. The effects of the Brandy on the beer caused. Kennedy to prolong his stay for two or three days, there   being in all four coins changed in a similar, way. Kennedy had worked for five years   with Mr. Nixon, bore a good character, and had found the coins in the gutter in Mel- ourne, an as quite unconsious of what he was doing. The Bench took a lenient view, and dismissed the case....

FRANKSTON. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 17 January 1877

FRANKSTON.       A more painful sensation has been pro- duced in the minds of the residents of Frankston and neighborhood, in consequence of the discovery that the man William Hasting, lying in the Melboune gaol awaiting his trial for the wilful murder of his wife on or about the 6th December last, has been guilty of a criminal assault upon his daughter, a girl fifteen years of age.   It appears from the statement made in   writing by the girl that her father first assaulted her when she was only nine years of age and whilst they were living at Mr. F. Stephens, and continued it until July   last, just previous to her going into the service of Mrs. Wm. Davey. On each oc- casion the father threatened to kill the girl   if she told her mother of his unnatural conduct. She, however, did tell her mother, and it is known that the mother threatened to inform upon him if he did not change his conduct....
