Shocking Fatality at Burnie. CAUSED BY AN EXPLOSION. [Newspaper Article] — Emu Bay Times and North West and West Coast Advocate — 2 November 1897

Shocking Fatality at Burnie CAUSED BY AN EXPLOSION   It is impossible to describe the great shock   caused to the community on Monday evening   by the report that Master Arthur Chapman,   eldest son of Mr. A.E. Chapman, our worthy   and most highly esteemed StipendiaryMagis-   trate, has been killed by an explosion.   People were stunned by the awful news, and the shocking ocourrence caused a gloom     over the whole district. Mr Chapman's son   devoted a good deal of time to experiments   in chemistry, and in making "colored ???"     etc. and while occupied on Monday       aft ernoon, in mixing some chemicals with a pesltle and mortar, it being too wet to go out for a walk, an explosion occurred, the fumes   of which injured the unfortunate young man  ...

A DELIBERATE SUICIDE. MR. WILLIAM SORELL. [Newspaper Article] — Emu Bay Times and North West and West Coast Advocate — 2 November 1897

A DELIBERATE SUICIDE, MR. WILLIAM SORELL, LAUNCESTON, Monday.— About 5 o'clock yesterday morning, Wm. Sorell, well known throughout the city died at the General Hospital under distressing circumstances. It appears that some time between 8 and 9 o'clock on Saturday night Sorell, who had for some time been an in patient at the Hospital (having been only discharged on Wednesday after treatment for a painful malady) went to the Main Line Hotel, where he was served by the barman. He asked if he could have a bed and received an answer in the affirmative, Mr Sorell then left the bar parlor but after a while he re turned and showed the barman an ounce bottle containing a small quantity of lauda num, at the same time making the observation that he 'had done it' as he was 'tired of his life.' The barman made an emetic and sent for Dr. Pardy, who arrived with all promptitude and prescribed the usual remedies. The doctor then ordered the patient's removal to the hospital. Mr Sorell never rallie...

How a Lady Squared Her Overdraft. [Newspaper Article] — Emu Bay Times and North West and West Coast Advocate — 2 November 1897

How a Lady Squared Her Overdraft. The manager of a London banking establishment tells a charming example of that   delightful inability to transact business of any sort which so often accompanies great artistic accomplishment. A young lady ar- tist, who enjoys a first class reputation amongst her colleagues, and whose pictures have repeatedly attracted considerable attention at recent exhibitions, was (says London   " Table Talk ") persuaded by her friends   to start a banking account. Having been shown the obvious advantage of the cheque system, she followed the advice. Matters went on quite smoothly, until one day she received a communication from the bank manager, in which she was politely informed   that she had overdrawn her account, and   would have to make up for the deficiency by paying in the sum of £20. Full of indignation, the artist sat down immediately and penned a reply in the fol- lowing terms :— "Sir,— ...
