Steel Barrels Made to be Nested. [Newspaper Article] — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell Citizen — 8 May 1914

Steel Barrels Made to ..be Nested. A' new and ingenious type of steel barrel so designed as to permit compact storage when chipped empty is to be placed on the market abroad. The chief featilre about this barrel is that it is made in halves that are exactly similar. with flanges provided so that any two halves can be bnolted together to form a complete barrel In the shipping world bulky articles like barrels, when shipped empty, are charged at bulk tonnage rates. lar rels -.of this type, when nested com pactly; will be entitled to weight rates, reducing thoshipping chargds materially. This inventidn brings to mind the fact that in the old days of the whaling indtlstry ships were often compelled to put to sea with out proper ballast because of the fact that all the available space was occupied by empty barrels.

Kaiser's Airship Station. lieligoland, the tiny island in the North Sea which termnny proposes to turn into a great station for her airships, is one of the most cur ious islands in the ieorld. Its towering cliffs, for instance, are largely artificial. Some years ago there was gras-e fear that the island, which was steadily growing smaller, would soon he eaten away entirely by the waves from the south-west. But £.1,000,000 has been spent on raising a cliff of granite on this. exposed side.
