SERVICE OF RATES. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE ADVERTISER.) [Newspaper Article] — Euroa Advertiser — 8 August 1884

SERVICE OF RATES. (TO THE EDITORL OF TIE .AIUER1TISEIi.) Sni,-The columns of the Adrertiser being open to the ventilation of public orievanc es I take tle liberty of writin, payers in the shire a piece of great in justice. I speak chiefly in reference to the ratepayers of the central riding, though 1 believe there are grounds for complaint in the other ridings also. During the year 1883, few, if any rate notices were served, particularly in the parish of Moglonemby. Now, as rate payers do not know what their holdings are assessed at till they recevo notices, I fail to see how they canl be expected to pay their rates, unless, indeed, they chase the Shire secretary or Councillors about to see what they are indebted to the Shire. However to make up for the concession of 3883, as I take it, we are not only to pay up last years arrears, but to pa3 t .e current years in advance. Now, I contend this is not right. Many of us find it very incon venient to pay two years ram in a llump, and wo...

THE COUNCIL ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Euroa Advertiser — 8 August 1884

TAE COUNCIL ELECTION. The election day is drawing near, When ratepayers will have a right To elect an honest councillor, Who for their good will light. I hear our old and honored friend Is coming forth once more To do battle for his district, As he has done before. Then, is he not the proper moan That :ll of us should trust ? Ile'll see into all your wants, And have you treated fair, Unlike some: other councillors, Who neither know, nor care. There's not a manai can cast a slur, And say lie is not true To the ratepayers of his riding, Or township-old or new. Ile's the man we ought to have, Who needs not any quiding, You cannot make a hyprocrite Of the old menmb2r for our riding. As journalists it is our duty to allude to -the coming election, and we do so with extreme diffidence. not only. on account of our; limited knowledge of the vwants anid rquire ments of the district, but also from the fact, that the whole of the candidates are : men, eminently fitted for%-the position, and in.whose hands the affairs of the shire woUld, we believe receive the greatest attention.
