Gambling [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

Gambling . A complaint baa been made against a broker for being engaged in gambling , contrary to the new law . The complaint was made by a young man , whose money was won by the broker in question . Much as we desire a doe observance of the law , we utterl y despise the motive which prompted this complaint . The yonng man attempted to win the broker s money , as we have no doubt he may have done before , but not being the winner , he revenged himself b y informing . We think if either is deserving of punishment , it is tho informer , whose character needs a littlo change .

Heavy Load . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

Heavy Load . An enthusiastic Kentuckian , daring the funeral obsequies of Henry Clay , said , Mr . Clay ought never to have been buried on land ; they should have thrown him into the sea , and a continent would have been built on his body . We Tather think this would be piling on the agony a little too strong . i —_— . . BOTS , SAKB IOUR Fun .- ^ Nothing equals a boy , except a girl . The frolicking , harum scarum , hi g h glee times of boyhood , happy they were . Perhaps you never broke steers or eolts , never slid down hill , over fences , across the ice on the meadow , never skated among the huge fires on the ten acre pond , on a clear winter s night , drawing the prettiest girl in all the town after you holding on a stick . v I ^» m X ^ . FIGHT BprwKBjr HAWKBB OP BraarrxemAM AWB DAW MNWLTT FOR £ 19 » , MO * TD * Y , Aran . 4 . These men were originally matched to fight on the 11 th of January last , MNulty staking £ 50 to £ 45 , and receiving £ 0 to fight in the hardware district . They met and were disturbed by the powers that be , which led to an adjournment until the following day , when , after a good deal more hunting about by tho beaks , they met at Delves Green , near Walsall , and fought until darkness came on , and another adjournment took p lace . The referee named the following morning , but , upon the arrival of the men on the ground , MNulty refused to agree to the same referee acting again ; a dispute took place , and the fight was not renewed . A lengthened correspondence then followed , the result of which was , that £ 50 a side was added to the money down , and MNulty agreed to give Hawkes £ 10 to fi g ht on the home circuit . The men again went into active training , Hawkes at Chelten...

THB FIGHT . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

THB FIGHT . Bound 1 . On throwing themselves into position there was no remarkable display of science on either side—if anything the attitudo of MNulty was the more artistic . In point of size there was great disparity , Hawkes standing some two inches over his adversary , and having consequently israch the advantage . in reach . He ( Havskes ) has a head much resembling th ; bird from which , for anything we know to the oontrary , his name may be derived . His beak is large and aquiline , and there appears to be as little flesh on his countenance as is to be found on the heads of falconidm in general . His resemblance to this species of bird is heightened by the manner in whioh he stands with his neck stretohed and his bill projecting , as if in the act of striking that weapon into a recumbent victim . Little time was thrown away on either side in sparring ; Hawkes at once went to work , eaught Mac on the ribs with his left—MNulty elosed , and some slight fibbing took place , Hawke...

BBMARK 3 . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 May 1853

BBMARK 3 . We have . bat few words to say upon the oonduet of this mill . There was little scientific display on oither side . It was nothing but downrig ht alojging and struggling at close Quarters from ind to end . Of the two MNulty is decidedly tho better fighter and wrestler , bnt the !> ng arms and superior strength of his Adversary , oombined with hi * hatchet mu ; and capabilities as a receiver , fully equalised any little disadvantage his want of skill ind experience might eausehitn to labor undjr . DoubtB had been expressed as so the Jameness of either of tho men , but the bitle of Monday last must , in the eyes of ai present , folly acquit them both of any disposition to exhibit the white feather .
