u 3 BURNED CANE FIELD. A SERIOUS LOSS TO THE MA KAWELI PLANTATION. Two Men Thought to Have Been In cinerated Over $36,000 Worth of Sugar Goes up In Smoke. The steamer Iwalani brings news from Kauai of a disastrous fire in the upper cane field of the Makaweli plant ation, which has destroyed between 165 and 1 70 acres of cane. The fire broke out last Tuesday after noon near 2 o'clock and burned for over two hours and a half. It was started by a spark from a Baldwin locomotive in the field above the mill, which covers the point of land extending lo the beach. The fire burned very rapidly as the cane leaves were as dry as straw, and the dense clouds of smoke which arose could be seen for many miles along the coast. Large relays of men from the neighboring fields were engaged in fighting the fire, but their efforts were useless and its ravages were only stay ed when the flames reached the ocean limits of the plantation. As soon as the tire was over it was discovered that two men were mi...

7 r. ir lie,. - . THE ALAMEDA ARRIVES. SHE BRINGS PAUL NEUMANN AND " PRINCE" DAVID. Wm. R. Castle Also Comes Back An Interesting Scene at the Oceanic Wharf. The Alameda was telephoned this morning between 7 and 8 o'clock, but did not reach the wharf until near 10 o'clock. Long before she arrived there was a big crowd gathered at the Oce anic dock, among it the usual people having business there, besides a large number of natives, sight-seers and bus iness men drawn to learn the first news, if any came; regarding annexation and the mission of Colonel Mount. At -last the sharp prow of the Alame da shot into view across the end of the wharf and the crowd gathered along the edge to descry if possible the features of friends as they nearcd the landing. ''There is old Paul," cried a dozen voices, as the Alameda drew on. And sure enough, there stood Paul Neu mann against the rail, alternately lifting his hat and waving his hands as his friends hailed him from below. "Hellol Paul," cried so...

Just before Mr. Mount left for Ho nolulu he was interviewed by a Chron icle reporter as follows: ; "I have never discovered any reason for being afraid of newspaper men," said Mr. Mount, "and 1 hope none oi them have any reason to be afraid of inc. When 1 was selected to 30 to Honolulu on the errand on which I have been sent I knew that the public would want to get all the information they could about it, and I know pretty well about how much I can say. I can hardly be expected to detail my method of procedure when I get to the islands, and I could not do so if I would, for it will depend largely upon what I find there. As I understand my mission, it is tj ascertain, as far as I may, the situation in the Hawaiian Islands, and to do this satisfactorily I must adopt the best means that may present them selves when I reach the scene of my work.
