Caudle, with a party of three young men from St. Helens had reache1 Astoria overland on horse back, on their way to Tillamook county. The -trip was proposed far the purpose of exploring the country, and Mr. Caudle informs us that the region is very much hotter than he expected to find. Indeed, he is of the opinion that there is some of the finest land there that can be found anywhere on the Pacific coast. At our request he wrote a brief outline of his observations, from which it will be seen the Nehalem Talley is a locality worthy of more attention. 3Ir. Caudle says : " We struck the Xehalem in Co lumbia county some distance below what is known as the mouth of Rock Creek, and have traveled down the valley a distance of thirty miles or more, keeping as near as practicable in the valley all the time. iz-j THE ASTjQRIAff. ASTORIA, OREGON: I). C. IREI.AZI JEditor. TUESDAY. . -..Jtlt29, 1373 THE YACHT CEUB REGATTA. After three days very pleasantly spent on a visit to Shoalwater Bay, -we returned to our post of duty Sat urday evening to find that the busi ness and affairs of the Astokiax had been appropriately conducted during our absence by Rev. T. A. Hyland and the office force. The object of this visit "was to renew associations of a social and pleasant kind "with the people of Oysterville, formed on a previous visit, and to "witness the an: mial regatta of the Shoalwater Bay Yacht Club. It must be understood that no finer boats are ever constructed in these United States, no .prouder, more gentlemanly nor scrupulously honest owners, than those of Shoalwater bay, then, as a matter of course, this being known, it is easy to realize that every thing ihat could be done to make this regatta one of the finest events that could transpire in American waters, was done. Nothing was neglec...

MJ THE ASTOEIAN. TUESDAY- July 29, 1873 An Adroit Kobbcry. "Witli its unfailing fertility, of resource, the Figaro recounts the following extra ordinary histery: There are in Paris two or tliree women whose scandalous fortune lias removed them from the demi monde, and placed them in a world apart. One of these women is notorious throughout Europe for adventure.-:, and her diamonds are said to he worth eight millions of francs.. Among the most intimate of her visitors was a Sir Joseph D., a gentleman of distinguished appearance and perfect manners, whose advances were not dis couraged by Madame . It would teem, however, that the fascinating Eng lishman sought her diamonds, for he turn ed out to he the leader of a hand f rob lters admirably organized. His plans were deeply laid. In the month of Janu ary last year, he pursuaded the husband of !Madame , for she was married, that his rooms would be marvelously im proved, if the ceiling were painted with frescoes and he recommended an Ita...

Grain vessels now loading at San Francisco for Liverpqol receive about 4 10rf as an average, equal to $22 50 a ton. This is considered a high rate. So it is, as, compared with low rates paid formerly. .But it is idle to rail at existing facts when no amount of rail ing will help matters any. The Alta, of Fan Francisco, justly says: ""A large portion of the tonnage of the commercial world is employed carry ing grain to English docks, and they get paid, taking into consideration the proportionate supply of tonnage to demand, according to the time em ployed in the transportation, whether for "a few days from France, a. week from the Mediterranean, ten to twenty-live days from 2vew York, three months 'from Chile, or four months from San Francisco.
