When the Ship Went Down By Owen Oliver (Copyright.) There was a space of still water round the Uralian. One reef shel tered her as she lay upon another, straining and groaning, like a beast in pain. Her bows had climbed over the hidden rock, pointing scornfully up wards till they were bent with their own weight and sagged downward again. Beyond the oasis of calm, a .heavy sea swept shorewards in towering green waves, until it reached a comb of jagged rocks, and poured through the openings in sheets of foam to a long, sandy beach. Three tossing boats were approaching the rocks as slowly as the current would suffer, looking for a passage through. The fourth-the last remaining-was just leaving the ship. The men who had lowered it, with no appliances but bare ropes, rubbed their chafed hands on their trousers and moppied their foreheads, and gathered together si lently-except a tall gentleman of about 40. He left the rest and went toward a lady, who stood back a little, watching them. T...

The Haunted Stairway By Temple Bailey (Copyright.) The stairway rose between walls of sold masonry for 20 stories. It was never used. Indeed it might be ques tioned if the men and women who shot up and down in the elevators knew of any other mode of ascent or descent. It was very still on the stairway and rather dim and dark, and gradually it acquired a bad name. At last a murder was committed on the tenth landing. The murderer was not apprehended and this fact added to the terrors of the stairway. Before a month had passed it was called haunted, and men whom no one would have coup~d superstitious moved their offices to other buildings. Finally the matter began to attract the attention of the owners. Many of the offices were empty and-the rentals were falling off. "It's got to stop," said Brixton & Brixton; and they put in more electric lights and hired watchmen to patrol the stairway. But, after a week's trial, the watch. man threw up his job. Three other watchmen came and went...

oHER HUSBAND By MABEL HERBERT URNER (Copyright.) "Of course, dear, suit yourself about it. If you think you would like the Hotel -- better, why, we will go there. But I imagine you will find these large hotels very much the same." "Yes, I suppose so," she answered listlessly. The waiter came up now, filled their glasses and placed the menu before him. He looked at it a moment, then handed it over to her. "Perhaps you had better order-" his voice was strained. She flushed, a deep, painful flush, as she took the card and gave the order. When the waiter had gone, she leaned back, her eyes wandering over the bril liantly lighted cafe. It was becoming intolerable-this thing between them, this conscious ness that he knew-that for weeks he had known. She felt now that from the first, even before she had admitted it to herself, with the quick intuition of his love he had known-that she was ashamed bf him! Ashamed of his awkwardness, his ignorance, his in ability to act and dress and look li...
