NORTHERN TRIBUNE SATURDAY, SPPTEMBER 23, 1875. NORTHERN MICHIGAN FRUIT. The American Pomological Society held its fifteenth biennial convention in Chicago .week before last. The first prize was won by Michigan fruit. This, In view of the fact that ths winter in this state wa3 the liartlest on fruit that has been known for years, is a Very high compliment to Michigan as a fruit grow ing state. There wa3 a fine collection of fruit from Grand Traverse Couritv ex hibited by Judge Jtamsdell, consisting of .apples, pears and plums. Side by side 'the Grand Traverse fruit was a collection from Nova Scotia, which was noticeable from the similarity to the Traverse fruit. Plums are a very profitable fruit In Traverse County. NORTHERN TRIBUNE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1875. WATER WORKS VS. A STEAM FIRE ENGINE. The Tribune showed a couple of weeks since that a steanTfire department prop erly 'equipped for reliable service would not cost touch, if any, less than $10,000. Since that time we have investigated the mattermore thoroughly than we then had time to do, and have seen nothing to-in-duce us to think that it could bo made much smaller than the sum named, while there are many things which might make it run over ths amount named. The in terest on this amount would be $1,000. .At the lowest estimate the annual ex pense of keeping the department in readiness for good and reliable service would not be less than ten per cent., or $1,000, with a probability of its' going -above that amonnt. Here is an annual expense to be met of $2,000, and a cer .tainty of having the principal to pay. at some future time. It cannot but be con ceded by all that the water works sys tem, provided we .had it in operation, would give...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1875. THE INLAND NAVIGATION. The importance of securing the open ing of navigation into Burt and Crooked Lakes cannot b? too highly estimated by ! the residents of this Tillage or by the country surrounding those lakes. That the importance of the work is appreci ated by the last mentioned individuals we have no doubt The editor of this paper during the last week conversed with many of them, and found that they were posted regarding the efforts which were being made to secure this improve ment, and that they keenly felt the ne cessity for it. As has been stated many times before in the Tribune, much of the very choicest farming lands in the state are in the immediate vicinity of these Lakes. Their merits have become known and many homesteads located upon them, and much of the balance bought by par ties wishing to improve them at some fu ture time when communication with the outer world becomes more convenient. There are also a large quantity of t...
