(b Polfar lbroni c. SATURDAY, SEPT. 23, 1676. ..-We are now enjoying fall her---cool nights and warm -The lesees of the State Peni Intiary are about to erect a ware bose on the bank of the river gposite here, as a depot for sup plis for the convicts employed on the railroad. _We had preaching here on genday last, morning and evening, Bev. S. H. Cooper, presiding elder, ociating. The Rev. Mr. Boddie was unable to attend, owing to sickness in his family. _Parties who have [raveled a good deal over this and a"ooning parishes, say that they never saw the cotton crop so far advanced this early in the season as it is at4 present, hardly any unopen bolls being upon it. This is singular, Considering the backward spring we had. -The weather is all that could be desired for the picking of cot ton. It is cool and dry, and no dew in the morning. The cotton is well-opened, and, as a general thing the pickers are not up with their work. They ought to take dsvdntage of the present favorable seaso...

Indians between the ble's and the r' treatingeavalry tocharl,,. When the retreat began from the skirm ish line only one roan is known to hays been wounhded. The number of Indians actudlly engag, (1 at thi, point did nut ex c'ed sixty. All the mien who were* killed in this coun a:lnd fell while getting their horses and while they were retreating acro.s the ford to the blutff, except the wounded man. The iandluig of the troops on this occasion has been severely criticised. On cn tering the bottom they were first deployed as skirmisher.., and then mounted and dismounted several t:nes -ithin a few minu:es with out any apparent cause. The soldiers were withdrawn from skirmish line after they had tired a few shots at the Indians, who were along way off, and there was no defense of the woods worthy of the name. All this conspired to demoralize the troops, and the manner in which the retreat was conducted caused it to degenerate into a stampede. Thi re is a strong impression that, had a to...

'be (ttrfar (bronic.k J. M. SWEENEY, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Saturday, October II, 1W76. OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF GRANT PARISH. 'UTie clerk of toe s:eamlcr C. ii. Durfee, says that he heard at Alixandria that there is no doubt but that Indiana is gone Demo cratic. Ward, Flowers and Philips. On Sunday last these worthies came driving into Colfax from Co tile. Their advent was known be fore band, anti the reception they received was of the very coolest sort. It was thought they would speak here last Monday, and it may have been their intention to have doue so; but finding that.the colored pcople were very much incensed against theam, they con cluded that discretion was the better part of valor, and they left for more congenial parts. Those fellows are too well known in" (rant parish to be respected by either white or black, Democrat or Republican. We know how both parties abhor the.n, and al though they are making Demo cratic speeches, the Democrats of this parish have no earthly use for th...

bte olifar b rhonidt. J. MI. 8 WEENEY, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Saturday, October' ~, IT6. OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF GRANT PARISH The Mut Meeting and Barbecue. Monday was certainly a big day in Colfax. Since the pariah of Grant was created, a gathering of such magnitude never before as sembled within its boundaries. There were fully seven (hundred whites and three hundred colored present. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed and the speakers received great applause. General Francis T. Nicholls was the first to address the multitude. We cannot say that the General if a great orator; but his auditors could perceive that the words which emanated from his lips, were direct from his heart, and that they were full of truth. The General is no politician-the can dicacy for Governor being forced upon him by the people's delegates to the Baton Rouge Convention and there is no doubt in our mind S if General Nicholls is placed in the Gubernatorial chair of Louis iana, he will make the best Ex ecutive tha...
