Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, 2 2 1984 May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! In Judaism and Christianity the inspired writers use many metaphors to compare God's relationships with His chosen people. None of these images and metaphors rival the image of God (or Christ, the God-Man) as Bridegroom and Israel, the Church and the Christian individual as the Bride. Christianity perfects God's Song of Songs with Christ's ardent longing to give Himself for each of us in a burning love that reaches its peak of expression in the emptied form of Jesus on the cross. His heart is pierced and blood is poured out to prove how passionately He loves each of us. We have all been brought up in a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. June is the month dedicated to Jesus in His burning love for us that should call out a love-response of total submission to Him. I have chosen some key ideas found in the Son...

JESUS—LOVER OF MANKIND [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

JESUS —LOVER OF MANKIND There exists a strange paradox in Christian piety. As the great saints, such as St.Bernard,St.Francis Assisi,St.lgnatius and St. Teresa of Avila,so we,too, realize that Jesus is the Way,the Truth and the Life (Jn 14:6).There is no way of receiving eternal life except that God's pre-existent Word pitched His tent among us (Jn 1:14). Because the eternal Son of God became human,as human as you and I,even tempted in all things as we are (Heb 4:15),we now have the way in which we can experience God's love for us expressed in human terms we can understand. By dying for each of us Jesus Christy in and through His human suffer ing but also now in His resurrected humanity, united to His divinity, can heal us by indwelling in us. He pours out His Holy Spirit and in His Spirit we know with the absolute certitude of faith that He died out of love for us (Ga 2:20). He is truly God's love made manifest for us, in a human heart or consciousness that expresses the consciousness...

A PLASTIC JESUS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

A PLASTIC JESUS Yet there is always a danger in our devotion to Jesus. We can make Him too much a Sky-God who drops down from Heaven and stays a mong us for about 33 years before His Father calls Him back to Heaven. Or we can make Him too much an Earth-God who is the most noble of men,but who is not really totally God. How can we keep a balance between Jesus' awesome transcendence and His all-so-human,passionate intimacy toward us?

A BRIDAL MYSTICISM [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

A BRIDAL MYSTICISM There are many metaphors and allegories used in Scripture and devotional writings to describe the God-Man's relationship to us human beings. He is the Good Shepherd who feeds us and protects us. He is the Good Samaritan who binds up our wounds and sees to our healing. He is a King,all-powerful and we are His servants. He is the Vinedresser who protects His vines from the little foxes but who also prunes the vines unto greater fruit. He is a Judge who can sentence us to an eternal life of bliss or pain. But one image that predominates is that God is the Lover of mankind, the Philanthropus of the human race. Jesus is the image of the invisible God(Col 1:15) and He best mirrors the perfection of God as love (1 Jn 4:8) when He dies for love of us. Is it any wonder that the most consistent and powerful metaphor used in Scripture to describe God's burning love for His people and for each individual who enters into the Kingdom of Heaven is that of God,and, above all, of C...

NUPTIAL INTIMACY [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

NUPTIAL INTIMACY We read in the Old Testament how God is the Bridegroom and His chosen people are His Bride. He does not make a contract so much as a covenant based on self-emptying love and intimate concern for His people. Hosea is the prophet of such an espousal: I will betroth you to myself for ever, betroth you with integrity and justice, with tenderness and love; I will betroth you to myself with faithfulness, and you will come to know Yahweh (Ho 2:21-22). Isaias beautifully describes such an intimate, bridal relationship between God and His people, lsrael: Like a young many marrying a virgin, so will the one who built you wed you, and as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so will your God rejoice in you (Is. 62:5). But the peak of bridal mysticism is found in the beautiful allegory of the Song of Songs of the Old Testament. It can be read and prayerfully experienced on various levels. Commentators of the Old Testament saw it predominantly as a wedding song of marriage between...

CHRIST'S BURNING LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

CHRIST'S BURNING LOVE What stands out strongly as we prayerfully let the beautiful words of the Song of Songs become our experience in Christ is how much God loves us through the most beautiful of all men,Jesus Christ. Like a powerful drama, this is a story of the pursuing love of the Bridegroom for His Bride. It becomes more intensely experienced by her through a series of trials and purifications,of absences and presences of her Beloved that mount in passion and finally climax in the mystical marriage. The Bride sees her weaknesses, even sinfulness, yet the love of her Groom transforms her into a beautiful Bride who is able in an unbelievable way to "ravish" her Beloved. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus also primarily accentuates His burning love for each of us. And that love should engender in our hearts,in the deepest levels of consciousness, a consecration and a union that makes us mystically one with Him so that Jesus Christ becomes the first and the last in our lives, our tr...

ARDENT LONGING FOR THE BELOVED [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

ARDENT LONGING FOR THE BELOVED Love is never a linear journey from one point to another. It is rather a circular movement that increases the union of two persons. And,yet,it contains all other previous moments of absence and presence, of hungering and of being fed by the mutual giving and receiving. Still the present moment of desire is new, never before experienced in the same intensity and longing for union with the beloved. Yet tomorrow will bring new desires and new pains to prepare for anew loving union. This is the way the Song of Songs begins. The Bride, almost in a wild frenzy, cries out her longing that her Spouse kiss her with the kisses of his mouth. This is the Christian, you and I,called by God's free choice in His Son,Jesus Christ, through His Holy Spirit, to enter into the deepest union with Christ. Your burning desire comes first before the union is attained. Yet you can be certain, with the knowledge of the Holy Spirit, that God so wishes you to desire ardently for such a...

THE KISS IS THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

THE KISS IS THE HOLY SPIRIT St. Bernard in his commentary on the Song teaches that the kisses from the mouth of Christ, the Spouse of the Christian Bride, are really the Holy Spirit. Christ kisses us with the kisses of His mouth by giving us the Holy Spirit who makes possible this most intimate union between us individually and Christ. This is what it means to be truly charismatic: to be fervently desirous to receive the kisses, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that the individual Christian may enter into the transforming union with Christ. We know through the Holy Spirit that God has revealed to us that it is the work of the Holy Spirit to divinize us into Christ's Bride. St. Augustine learned through the Spirit to experience God's most intimate presence as that of God dwelling within the Christian: "I did not find you without,Lord, because I wrongly sought you without, who were within." Only the Spirit of the Father and the Son can reveal to you that they dwell within you (Jn 14:23). The...

DRAW ME IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

DRAW ME IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS You have seen many pictures of Christ with His arms outstretched. He invites you to come to Him,to be refreshed by His love, but also to have a part with Him by taking upon yourself your cross and following Him. In Ch.l:vs.2-4 Of the Song the Bride praises the beauty of her Spouse. "Your name is an oil poured out and that is why the maidens love you." Christ's love is to be preferred by you over all other loves. For you have already experienced what joy His indwelling presence brings you that makes all other created joys pale. Christ is your Beloved, your Lover and Comforter. He is constant and unchanging in His love for you. "Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever" (Heb 13:8). Of Him Jeremiah spoke: "I have loved you with an everlasting love,so I am constant in my affection for you" (Jr 31:3). Tender and delicate is Christ's love for you as a subtle fragrance of perfume. Such a human-divine love of Christ for you permea...

YOUR NAME AN OIL POURED OUT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

YOUR NAME AN OIL POURED OUT How healing is the name of Jesus for His name is His presence. He does within you at all times what His name signifies: God who saves or heals. His Father gave Him a name that is above every name (Ph 2:9). How sweet and healing to you in all your trials to call often on the name of Jesus to discover His presence living within you. This is the only name and presence on the face of the earth whereby you can be healed of your fears (Ac 4:12) for His perfect love casts away all your fears (1 Jn 4:18). In His name and presence you will ask anything of the Father and He will give it to you (Jn 16:23-26). Unceasing prayer for you becomes possible when the name and presence of Jesus enter into your heart, the deepest consciousness and core of your being where you meet Him in the constant embrace of Bride and Groom, made one through the Spirit. His presence continues even during your sleep, becoming a source of constant peace and joy. This prayer as a state of perma...

FEAR NOT: IT IS I [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

FEAR NOT: IT IS I The Prologue of the Song ends with the humble plea of the Bride that her Spouse,Christ,be her strength, drawing her ever deeper levels of loving union with Him. The remaining love poems in the Song are a poetic description of what you can be assured of,that when you humbly place all your strength in Christ,as you confess your own weakness,He will be your power (2 Cos 12:9-10). You can be sure that Jesus is always answering your ardent pleas that He draw you toever greater oneness with Him. He teaches you: "I tell you therefore :everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it will be yours" (Mk 11:24). The Prologue to mystical union lays this foundation for your faith, hope and love to grow through all the succeeding trials and purifications. This foundational belief is that Jesus loves you already , inf initely . He will not give you His new love because you ask for it. Your petition, when sincerely and humbly offered to Him through His love po...

BLACK BUT LOVELY [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

BLACK BUT LOVELY After the Bride has been led by the King into His inner chamber, she confronts the daughters of Jerusalem, who chide her out of jealousy that she who is black, has pretended to be the equal of the King. One result of your coming into greater oneness with Christ and in experiencing His infinite love for you is to become acutely aware of your nothingness and even sinfulness. One of the signs of a Christian being led by Christ into a deeper contemplative prayer is a sense of humility and truth. The Spirit of Jesus leads such a person of prayer away from the first flush of feeling prayer that so often inflates one with a spiritual pride in order to encounter Christ by deeper faith but also by a realism of his/her own sinfulness . The working of God's grace to instill into the serious Christian an anxiety, fear, disgust as he/she confronts the existence in the light of the 'not-yet," or the inauthentic "non-being", is not merely a reflection on death and a cry for immortalit...

YET ALREADY BEAUTIFUL [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

YET ALREADY BEAUTIFUL By confronting the false ego,the contemplative brings the perfect love of God,as experienced in the indwelling presence of Christ, to heal the fears that drive the soul into the dark world of unreality. As the darkness of your sinful nature lifts before the transfiguring light of the indwelling Christ, you begin to see that you also radiate anew beauty that is a sharing in Christ's beauty. You paradoxically come to the realization that you are lovely, worthy to be loved,as you actually are, by God,the Trinity, and capable of loving others freely; and yet all this beauty is sheer gift from God. You participate in God's very own nature (2 P 1:4). Christ's love poured into your heart through His Spirit lifts you up to see yourself as not only loved infinitely by Christ, but you are seen as beautiful and desirable by Him. Praise is on your lips and in your heart as you humbly rejoice along with Mary in what God in His greatness and humility has done to bring about you...

COME,MY LOVE,WINTER IS PAST [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

COME,MY LOVE,WINTER IS PAST In the second love poem (Ch 2:10 ff),the Groom speaks to the Bride and summons her to come and follow Him. Earlier the Groom bade her to forget herself insofar as she yearned inordinately for the delights that He brought her. Now she has obeyed Him in undergoing trials and sufferings in the purification of the senses. He calls her to come forth to labor even more diligently to bring forth fruit of the new life that He has espoused Himself to her to give her through His resurrectional presence. Winter is a sign here of the many trials of coldness, darkness and a sense of being close to death. There have been the spiritual rains, coldness and snow abounding in the Bride's experiences of her Beloved. There ha§ been the lifelessness of winter sins that have gripped her and throttled to death that loving presence of Christ to her. Now Christ calls to you also that all such "passive diminishments" on the spiritual level are gone. Through His new life in the resu...

COME,MY BRIDE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

COME,MY BRIDE In the third love poem (Ch. 4: 1 ff.)we find the Groom calling His beloved His Bride. He has espoused her as His own. He calls her to come down to Him to receive His offer to become mystically united in transforming union. How the soul must thrill at what she so eagerly wants! And yet how realistically is Christ, our Spouse, who calls us to greater union, the complete oneness with Him that will know no separation by summoning us away from the mountains that not only separate us from Him,but possess inimical forces that could destroy us if we do not descend to come to Him. The Bride needs to take only the final step to receive what her heart so ardently desires:complete consummation in nuptial union with her Beloved. How she herself does not suspect the many obstacles that lie within herself, within the layers of her consciousness and above all her unconscious/she truly wants to belong completely to Christ. This means to look honestly at our creatureliness, our existential "...

YOU RAVISH MY HEART (Ch.4:9) [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1984

YOU RAVISH MY HEART (Ch.4:9) There can be no true nuptial union except among equals in a mutuality of self-giving where each partner in the marriage gives to the other the complete gift of the other. The good news Jesus makes possible is that you and I in Baptism are lifted up to enter into the royal family of God. We are a royal princess capable of wedding the crowned Prince,Christ. That God-given beauty ravishes Him. Fidelity to Christ actually thrills Him. He wants even more to give Himself in total oneness with us individually. What a mystery that God reveals to the little ones that truly believe that He is love and seeks our return of love after He has first loved us with such perfect and complete love in His Son,Jesus! These are some of the profound truths found in the Song of Songs. And they are the constant elements found in true devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Lover of Mankind of you and me.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Am „ „ May the peace of our Lord Jesus SEP 11 ] qo4 Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! I pray that you have enjoyed a peaceful and restful summer. As you know,INSCAPE is published ten times a year. So when you were away on vacation,we also took a bit of a rest and are now ready to resume publication. That is why you didn't receive a copy for July and August. During those two months I had many occasions in retreats, summer school lecturing and giving conferences at various conventions to speak on marriage, sexuality and prayer. It has pained me to see how many, not only married couples, but also celibate religious and priests as well as single persons, believe in friendhips and in love and even in deeper prayer, but never seem to realize that true love should always bring us into a deeper contemplative spirit. In the very love we show another we should easily discover God as triune community,shinin...
