From the V l • Tribun Tssc "<il<iin Prcaa. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 29 May 1847

From the N. Y. Tribune The Mexican Press. The following, translated from a Jalapa paper, shows the spirit with which our advances arc met : "Confirm me in the perpetual possession of the property of which I have robbed you, and give me a favorable opportunity to rob you of more "Such is the true reading of the proposal of peace which the president of the Anglo-Ameri-can United States have made to Mexico. Such a proposal from one of the volunteers which follow Taylor; anxious to fill his pocket in any fashion, would have excited no surprise; but that the chief of a civilized nation should give such a proof of immorality, is a matter of shame and alarm to all who have anything to lose. It is plain that this step, shameful as it is in any light, has been prompted by the fact that our enemies are unable to bear the immense cost of the war, and the knowledge that within four months from this time their troops and their squadron will perish with hunger, or the inhabitants of Philadelphia,...

A CHINESE MUSTER [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 5 June 1847

A CHINESE MUSTER We set out at two hours past midnight, and were drawn over the frozen mud in the streets, without meeting a living soul. The watchmen only seated in their boxes, lighted by small lamps struck their staffs on hearing the sound of our carriage. The soldiers going in single file and the officers in the cabriolets were proceeding to the place of the review. Some soldiers had bows and arrows in their hands, others carried on their shoulders very small guns, and others, who went probably only to increase the number, had no arms at all. At the gate of the city, which was only half open, the guard examined by the aid of paper lanterns those who presented themselves to go out. In this way we passed through the narrow streets which led to the plain of Yanchen. In this open plain was a long file extending from east to west of great lanterns, on which were hang leaves of red paper bearing the inscriptions which indicated the names of the divisions there assembled. These lantern...

Col. J.C. Fremont - This gentleman, we understand has finally left for the States in company with Gen. Kearny. Their department was not a little unexpected, and it was probably hastened beyond their own anticipations. We have as band members of the "New York Spectator" of Nov. and Oct. containing an accurate statement (as far as we are informed) of Col. Fremon't operations in California, originally published in the "Union," Washington city, and with high eulogies bestowed upon him for his course in this country, by that paper. As a United States officer, he has distinguished himself in his topographital engineering, and his services at home may be justly appreciated, but Col. Fremont is certainly very unpopular in California, and each act of late has only served to heap up the measure of his unpopularity. By taking an early and a prominent part in the late disturbances, and insisting in quelling insurrection, he has thoroughly established a reputation and added laurels to his former...

EXTRACTS from a JOURNAL Written by a Member of the Party Latest from the California Mountains The extracts which we give below are full of thrilling interest. Mr. Fellun, the writere, better known as "Capt. Fellun," set out from the settlements in April last with six others, to extend relief to the remaining sufferers of emigration, still within the mountains, and also to collect and secure the scattered property of both living and dead. He succeeded in reaching the cabins, and with the exceptions of kiesburg, not a soul survived. They returned, bringing with them this man, and large packs of valuable property. Kiesburg was found in a truly lamentable situation; a long subsistance up on the bodies of his deceased comrades had rendered him haggard and ferocious-looking and the unsatiable appetite of the cannibal displayed itself on frequent occasions, even after animal meat had been placed before him. This fondness for human flesh he had suffered himself to acquire in preference to t...
