WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 16, 1850 Th* KngiiOi i»t *lrnr««nn. Our October dates from Nicaragua gavo us the confirmation of ♦ho treaty between that government and Americans relative to the right of way across, and which news, together with mmc particulars of tho projected ship canal enterprise was published in our last. Intelligence has been received as lato as November in the form of* official dcf<patcheo, addressed tho governor of this State. and tho commodore of tho squadron on tho coast, by our minister who had benn put in possession there, representing tho British fleet on the coast as having taken forcible possession of the country and hauled down the flag of our consulate.— This is startling news.and as its genuineness is altogether beyond question, wo havo only to await a full understanding of the matter, which the next steamer will bring to us, with that anxiety and interest which its importance so readily commands. That the British government regard their claims...

11.-nllh. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 16 January 1850

11.-nllh. The. cholera, it is said, while in Europe, climbed into Alpine regions and was most fatal in those mountain districts, thus proving that the icy hand of eternal winter scarce can stay the progress of the terrible destroyer. If the summer of IKSO witnesses its return to the United States thero is scarcely a doubt but it will be borne hitherward in tho sweeping tide of emigration. Chill as is the climate of this coast, it is at this pomt — this harbor — where it will probably first appear, and if conveyed into the interior, as will inevitably follow, we shudder in contemplation of tho awfulconsequences— at tho ordeal of terror and death through which we shall be called to pass. Wo have said thus much, moved by no sudden awakening fe;irsof a calamitous visitation by Cholera, for we hope tho fearful disease has emote its last victim on tho shores of our country, and much do we hope and beliove that here it will never appear. Hut we have seen the appointment of a health officer...

The fnndwlfh Islands. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 16 January 1850

The fnndwlfh Islands. The treaty between tho late American Commissioner for these Muiklh, Mr. Clms. l^jimee, and tho government, through Dr. (». P. Jurtd, Minister Plenijxitentiary, which was effoctod in this city during the visit of the latter, about three month* since, was conveyed to Honolulu by Commodore Voorhios, who had au audience of the King on the 10th ult , at which the usual congratulations were exchanged, and a high sense of approbation of its provisions expressed by hiH MajeHty. It was thought that its ratification would noon follow, yet conflicting opinions concerning the right of the parties here to negotiate this treaty are freely intimated. A lotter which we have received from Honolulu, datod December 22, complains of an increasing scarcity of flour and breadstuff* on those ihlnmK created by the demand in tho California market, and which the writer goes so far an to Bay is really becoming a source of alarm and anxiety.
