A correspondent of ft Melbourne paper tells how lie got rid of "a tr6u blcsomc stump: "With an Iricn-ailger' he bored a hold in tile center of the stump ten inches deep and into it put -about half a pound 61 oil 6$ vitro) and corked the hole up tight; lit six months the whole stump and roots extending through all of their ramifies- tions were so rotten that they were easily eradicated." An Englishman wlifc tried the burning-out process failed. He says- "I bored a hole one inch wide from eighteen to twenty-four deep put in one and one- half ounces of saltpetre; filled with water then plugged up tighti that was in November in June he took out the plug filled with parafinc oil and lit it; they burned while the oil lasted.
