18 K i M o 'f fS Southwest Chinese Journal FEBRUARY 1978 CONSUMER PROTECTION We are all consumers of one sort or another. Our daily lives and national economy revolve around the constant flow of goods and services from seller to buyer. 19 hi Southwest Chinese Journal FEBRUARY 1978 Rose Don Wu continued ! only single Chinese girls in those days. As the number of ; Chinese in the city grew, she organized a Chinese-American Citizens Club to promote good relations between the Chinese community and the rest of Tuscon, The Chinese community in Tuscon today is one of the most financially successful and Americanized in the nation. She also worked for various charitable causes and occasionally performed Chinese dances. In 1929 a friend of Rose invited a young man named Theodore Wu from San Fransisco to visit Tuscon. Since she was the only Chinese girl who could drive a car at that time he asked her to show them around. Apparently Theodore Wu was more impressed with Rose than he was with Tuscon because he got her to become his wife, and moved them both to San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Wu describes San Antonio in the early 1930's as a "mudhole", because there were still many unpaved streets. They began, like so many other Chinese...

11 H Hi Bt IS Southwest Chinese Journal MARCH 1973 Susie Gee's Honey Trees by Judy Lee 4^13£ * Whoever said "money doesn't grow on trees" forgot to tell Susie Gee, a lady with probably the greenest thumb in Houston. She is the creator of those delightful and unusual floral arrangements made of ribbon rosettes and crisp new dollar bills folded and pleated to form leaves, butterflies, and flowers. An arts and crafts enthusiast with a lot of imagination, Mrs. Gee first saw a money tree last summer when her sister-in-law brought one from California. After studying the folds of the dollar bills she was able to master the designs through trial and error, and has made improvements or. the prototype. Since then she has made over 20 trees, and several money "corsages" too. Sevan or nine bills are used on each tree in mostly $1 and $2 denominations, but if a person wants one made with bigger bills she'll do it - they all fold the same. The person in line to receive her next creation wants the...

13 W ifj H'i Southwest Chinese Journal MARCH 1978 The Great Wall of China . . . Hub for the Houston Chinese Community winds across a barren landscape in the ancient parts of the vast Asian continent. Built some 200 years prior to the birth of Christ, it is well over two thousand years old. As a massive fortification consisting of stone, it stretches 1,500 miles and once served as a discouragement to aggressive nomadic tribes that roamed the north China plains. It is the only man made structure visible from the moon . . . and now stands as a testimony to the belief of our ancestors . . . that a civilized community had to endure hardship and transcend fear to protect, preserve, and maintain an aesthetic and cultural heritage. It is a Sad Commentary . . . that within the city that facilitated and guided that first man on the moon to reflect back on the ancient wall, we cannot find a single structure that stands for a unified community effort on the part of the Chinese-American. In a ci...

14 i'Li iH H-'j= $ Southwest Chinese Journal MARCH 1978 Jeri Eng — Houston s Only Chinese Florist I by June Dove Leong Jeri Eng On February 14th Jeri discovered that the city is truly "romance- minded" ...for she was inun- dated with busi- ness... and had to press sister- in-law Cynthia into emergency service. Easter promises to be just as lively, as friends and loved ones are remembered with affectionate and thoughtful flo- ral arrangements. But busy is the way Jeri likes it...for flowers are the way Jeri expresses herself. She loves beauty and with her creative talent shares this beauty with one and all who come within her realm. It is this expression of herself which gives her great happiness. With both children in school, Jeri now has time to devote to her own fulfillment as a person...and her love of nature has steered her into this course of action. She is the daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Herbert Leong. Her father, a career Air Force officer is head of Personnel at the U.S. Ai...

15 Tfj B?f Southwest Chinese Journal MARCH 1978 The Message by June Dove Leong I Janita Gee's beautiful poem given to her father at Christmas expressed the love and appreciation a daughter genuinely felt for a parent who had lived his life for his fellow man. Many have experienced this goodness in Albert Gee, but never had the knack to say it as accurately, as expressively as Juanita. A child's love, earned by a devoted father, is one of the greatest rewards of parenthood. As we look forward to Easter, we remember the words Albert Gee spoke to Pastor Travis W. Key..."It's going to be all right." "I have known Albert for decades, ever since I was a young man," said Rev. Key, "and the words I reveal are genuine knowledge from intimate association. I know, it's going to be all right with Albert." When one accepts the Lord...the words of Jesus Christ...walking in His ways...are as normal as breathing. The Easter promise echoes through the corri- dors of Time..."Because I live," Jesus sa...
