STEPBEVS 'COUNTY TIMES THURSDAY, APRIL 3, T958 ft r!/ I: 1 /, tff LEY'S WAY —The sketch above is not a doodle. It is an "original" from the pen of one of America's greatest authorities on space, Willy Ley. It is his conception of a space station which scientists now think will be orbiting 1.075 miles out before our present school children are gray- bcards. This doughnut-shaped "spinning wheel" type station is the type advocated by Wernher von Braun, another space pioneer. Lecturing in Cleveland, Ohio, in connection with his new book, "Rockets, Missiles and Syacc Travel," Ley said that unless there are new developments in rocketry, such a space station will be necessary before man lands on the moon. Nuclear energy now offers the best power source to run the vehicle, he says. His sketch shows a globular nuclear reactor at top with a disk of shielding underneath it. Arrow indicates air lock entrance at bottom of cylindrical hub. Interior of wheel would provide room for accom- modations...
