He is Clarence Muse, composer of several Negro plays, composer of popular hit "When It's Eleepy Tlma Down South," and famous for his work in the title role of "Porgy," one of the most sensational Negro plays ever written. As famous in his way as Charles Gilpin, who was a bit player with him in the celebrated Lafayette group of Negro players in New York, and for whom O'Neill wrote "Th« Emperor Jones," Muse has for twenty-five years striven to elevate the theatrical art of his people, the Negroes of the south. The thing that was impressive was the drive that the Wiley backs had. They were as hard a set of run- ning backs as has been our priv- ilege to observe. They really had to be nailed to be stopped. Primitive savages and pri- meval monsters were not the only menaces. A river of floating peril, with hideous islands of flesh and slithering reptiles, threatened the lives of these two noted explorers and their natives many times. On one occasion, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson found themselves sur- rounded by rhinos. One of them, in fact, made a dash for Mrs. John- son and when within 20 feet of the camera was killed by her husband.
