REPEAL Continued from Page 1 term in office. The introduction of the legislation follows the release last week of a General Accounting Office report that estimated the cost of enforcing the military's anti-gay policy at $191 million since its implementation in 1993. Authors of the report estimated that 800 spe- cialists with critical skills were fired from the Armed Services because of revelations about their sexual orientation. A group of retired military generals and admi- rals announced their support of the legislation to coincide with its introduction in Congress. Several of the flag officers recently acknowl- edged they are gay. C. Dixon Osburn, executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said the officers have first-hand knowledge of the harm caused by the military's anti-gay policy. "Our armed forces need more service mem- bers to fight the global war on terrorism," Osburn said. "Our country cannot afford a law that jeopardizes the continued service of 65,000 ...

nation news World Briefs Compiled by Rex Wockner Wockner News Service United Kingdom's Royal Navy launches campaign to get sailors out of the closet The United Kingdom's Royal Navy is partner- ing with the nation's leading gay-rights group, Stonewall, in an effort to increase gay enlistment and encourage more sailors to come out of the closet, The Sunday Times reported. Vice-Admiral Sir James Bumell-Nugent said the sailors' coming out would contribute to a cul- ture in which "all our people are valued for them- selves and are thus able to give 100 percent to their job." As a part of the campaign, the Navy will advertise in the biweekly gay newspaper The Pink Paper. "[The ads] will show those who are gay and are uncomfortable about the environment [here] that our position on diversity is not just empty talk," said Commodore Paul Docherty.: *'It is quite possible that we will have an [openly] gay admiral in the fullness of time." The UK lifted its military gay ban in 2000. In related ...

When Bush was caught on tape Conversations secretly recorded by a former confidante indicate the President's views on gays have evolved — to the community's detriment Mubarak Dan r Currents Doug Wead, a former friend and confidante of President George Bush, recently released a slew of tapes he secretly record- ed while Bush was gearing up for his first presidential bid. The tapes are unique in that they capture Mr. Bush in moments of honest and frank reflection as he contemplat- ed a host of issues and policies as he was trying to stake out his positions on matters as divisive as gay rights and courting Christian conservatives. The tapes are fascinating because Mr. Bush, unaware that he was being recorded, was so utterly candid in his thoughts. They've been devoured by the media and the public precisely because of the honesty they exude. That makes Mr. Bush's comments — particu- larly as they relate to gay issues and to his rela- tionship with Christian evangelicals — particu- larly...

fe+stylestage Way over the top Varla Jean Merman drags theatergoers up to her level with the circus-inspired, 'Under a Big Top' The 1964 marriage of Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine is one of the weirdest in Hollywood history. It only lasted 38 days. Merman reportedly said the knot began to unravel because Borgnine subjected her to "Dutch ovens"—that's when Borgnine would fart in bed while trapping her under the sheets. In Merman's autobiography, she devoted a chapter to the Borgnine marriage: It consisted of one blank page. That bitter coupling produced Varla Jean Merman (aka Jeffrey Roberson) — at least that's what Varla Jean tells people. "But Varla doesn't like to talk about her par- ents. In fact, she can't — according to Mr. Borgnine's lawyers," Roberson jokes. "She's actually run into Earnest Borgnine a number of times — strangely, in his home,. Now, she's not allowed to go within 100 yards." For a drag artist, Roberson doesn't perform much at in nightclubs. Like Dame Edna an...

tube Lynn, left, and Alex Amazingly addictive When partners Chip and Reichen won "The Amazing Race 4," two seasons went by without any gay contestants. But season 7, which kicked off on March 1, has two queer teams: Lynn and Alex, boyfriends (not "partners") from West Hollywood; and Susan and Patrick, a mom and gay son from Ohio. Both teams are fiercely competitive, The funny Lynn and Alex are catty queens — and they both lisp! They issue a warning that if anyone crosses them on the race they'll "scratch their eyes out — when they're not looking, of course." But the seemingly nice Susan and Patrick take a novel approach by forming an alliance. They also set traps with friendly gestures. Patrick says he's on a mission to personally destroy celebrity contest- ants Rob and Amber [for- mer "Survivor" contest- ants]. You could make the argument that Patrick's obsession with "Boston Rawb" is rooted in sexual tension. In the preview for next week's episode, Lynn and Alex trade words with t...

nusic The party s back on Fannypack returns with more funky fun — and they've improved THEIR DUTY IS TO MOVE YOUR BOOTY: Belinda, Fancy, Cat, DJ Matt Goias and Jessibel revive '80s-style hip-hop. By Gilbert Garcia Fannypack "See You Next Tuesday" Tommy Boy Records Making the scene in 2003 with the goofy- naughty single "Cameltoe," Fannypack were part joke band, part surefire concept. Conceived by New York DJ Matt Goias and his musical partner, the singularly dubbed '"Fancy,*' Fannypack featured three young women rapping and strutting to old-school booty beats with a sly disco touch. The girls' rap skills were primitive at best, but then again, so were J.J. Fad's back in the day Not surprisingly, the saving grace of Fannypack were Goias and Fancy's bumping beats. If anything, Fannypack's debut, "So Stylistic," was surpris- ing for just how bad it wasn't. It was never really certain that Fannypack would return. Not only have they delivered a new album titled "See You Next Tuesday" the...

FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE Seva Galkin is the art director of Russia's only gay magazine, KVIR. His new photo-book of male nudes, "Rus" (Kolonna Publications, 2005, $35), echoes the clean precision of Herb Ritts. When framing up his beefcake Adonises, Galkin employs chiaroscuro with a firm hand and a poet's touch. Light and shadow cascade across supple flesh, chiseled muscles and plenty of uncircumcised privates. Containing more than 100 photographs, "RUS" showcases a breed of men who look like Olympian athletes. Galkin's production philosophy is priceless: He likes to conduct shoots when "the models are horny." The book is only slightly flimsy — cardboard cover and spiral bound, but the reproductions and grade of paper inside are first-class. This book alone could boost Moscow's queer tourism.
