The Henrietta Journal is an enter- prising, and as a consequence, a prosperous paper. It is soon to be enlarged from twenty-four to twenty- eight columns. We fail to e;iteh the dritt of the News' meaning.— IVaco Examiner. Probably the Examiner pays too much attention to the remarks, and not enough to the drift. A stroke of lightning took off a Georgia negro's boots without in- juring the negro. That discounts the medium Fay's celebrated coat feat. Martin, of the Sherman Register, denies most positively that it is the office of State Representative he is after. Is it possible that we have an- other Congressional aspirant among us? ! -rr- Jhc Baily JUros. DEMNON, SATURDAY APRIL 13, 1878. The Sleeper Caae. Judge Sleeper, of Waco, has just been tried before the United States court at Austin, for purjury, and bound over to await action of the Grand Jury. The charge was made by Marshal Corlew. The notorious radical U. S. Attorney. Jack Evans, conducted the prosecution. The charge was that Judge Sleeper made affidavit in a habeas corpus case that Corlew had arrested a man in his bed at two o'clock at night, when as a matter of fact the man was stand- ing in his yatd when the arrest was made. It was not necessary for Judge Sleeper to make affidavit, as the law did not require it, and the fact was wholly immaterial whether the man was in bed or out doors when the ariest was made. The Judge admitted to the court that he was in error as to the place ef ar- rest, but nevertheless the trial was gone through with. The Judge has sued for a writ of habeas corpus be- fore ]udge Duval, which will of course be granted. This pe...

The Sublime Scenery of the CSraiicl Canyon of the ArkanaaM, in Colorado. [From the Kooky Mountain Tourist*] Leaving the hotel immediately follow- ing an early breakfast, next morning a drive of 12 miles brings us to the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas. Disappoint- ment is bitter, and feeling of resentment beyond control, as nowhere can the eye discover the canyon. In tho immediate foreground the pinion growth is rank and dense; just beyond, groat bleak ridges of bare, cold rock contrast strongly with the profusion of foliage, hiding every thing beneath from sight, while away in the dim distance the snow-crowned peaks of the continental divide are outlined sharp and clear against the solid blue of the morning sky. Though grand beyond any thing we have seen in amazing extent of vis- ion, the mind is so wrapped up in the anticipation of tho gloom, and vastness an...

An Erroh The Democratic State Convention, at its meeting in Galveston, two years ago, neglected to appoint Con- gressional committees lor calling the Congressional Conventions, and now the question is, by whose authority are the conventions to be called.— Denison A'iws. The Galveston convention did ap- point congressional committees, and the Dallas convention was called by the committee in this district, Geo. Aldrich, of Dallas, being chairman. At the Dallas convention a new com- mittee for the District was appoint- ed, and Capt. F. M.
