AN APPRECIATION. Mr 0. H. Lienor!;, of Lorquon, in re ferring to the recent farm competitions, expressed bis regret at not being able to attend at Nhill on the 17th inst., when 'the farm competition awards were read out. He expresses surprise at receiving the second prize in the competition for best crop 1913. He has to thank Mr C. H. Towns, the secretary, for plao ing him in the competition, as he (Mr Lienert) did not want to enter. He states that he has received very valuable information in regard to farming from Mr Richardson, and he quite enjoyed j being out with the party on tho tour of inspection. Mr Lienert thinks it will be a grand move to have the Champion ship competition for 1914. Mr Temple A. J. Smith, Chief Field Offioor of the Department of Agriculture, thinks tho report a splendid one and should prove highly satisfactory to the farmers of tho district. OBITUARY. Mr William SkeRgs, an old resi dent of Nhill, passed away on Sun day morning last, at the age of 75 Deceased had been unwell during the past fortnight and the end was not expected—the cause of death being heart failure. The late Mr Skeggs was born in Ilford. Essex, in 1839, and came to Nhill with his wife and family in 1887, and for many years was caretaker of the Lowan Shire Hall. About 9 years ago he retired from dutji and for some time resided with his daughter, Mrs George Lewis, of Church Hill. Deceased was always known as a thorough old English gentleman and was most highly res pected by alt with whom ho was acquainted. He leaves a widow and 6 children to mourn their loss. Mr Charles Skeggs, W. A., Mrs Thurston (Ballarat), Mrs E. Barber, Mrs W. Paterson, Mrs Geo. Lewis, and Mrs C. Turner, W.A., are children of de ceased. A cablegram states:—Sir Edward Holden, chairman of the London, City and Midland Bank, at a meeting insisted that the gold reserve of Great Britian was insufficient to meet reasonable demands. STATE ELECTORAL ROLLS. Householders are asked to give every assistance to the poliee in the compilation of the now State voters' rolls. A.t each house a schedule and cards will be left, and it will help the collector if the papers are filled in promptly. At the by-elections last week it was found that the rolls were in a very bad state, many people be ing disfranchised through their own negligence. It is hoped that this state of things will be remedied, so that the rolls will be complete and accurate for the general elections, which take place at the end of the year.

AN INTERESTING FINDING. An important decision was given by Mr E. HarrisoD, P.M., at the Murtoa Court of Petty Sessions on Wednesday, under the Employers and - Employes Act, which would seam to be far-reaching in its effects. When an engagement of shearers can be proved to have been mutually made, and then broken by the em ployer before work is actually com menced, such employer will be lable for the full value of the shearing-of the sheep which ho said he had for shearing, whether it be 24 hundreds or 24 thousands.
