RESTORING HISTORIC STRUCTURE. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 20 August 1927

RESTORING HISTORIC STRUCTURE. The old church of St. John the Baptist at Canberra, which has historic associations, is being restored, the residents feeling that this venerable place of worship is a welcome re- lief from the ultra modern aspect of the town generally. The roof trusses, which have been tem- porarily stiffened will need to be completely replaced at a later date. Portions of walls on the southern side of the nave have been replaced with concrete, and all the flooring in this portion of the church and under the gal- lery has also been replaced. Two buttresses on the south-west and north-west corners have been partially re-built, seating has been restored, and other work carried out, so as not to interrupt the conduct of services dur- ing reconditioning. The restoration is being effected with funds raised from the public, and it is expected that the building will be extensively used pending the erection of a cathedral, a site for which was recently dedicated. CONTROL OF CANBERRA. Residents' Representation. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 20 August 1927

CONTROL OF CANBERRA. Résidants1 Representation. Representations designed to induce the Federal Ministry to grant a form of Parlia- mentary or municipal representation to re- sidents of Canberra will probably be made soon after the seat of Government is trans- ferred to the Federal Capital. At present residents are obliged to pay taxes to the Federal Capital Commission, and these are collected in the same way as rates imposed by municipal councils. No provision hasj yet been made, however, for the extension of municipal government to the Territory or for. granting residents representation in Parlia- ment. Speaking at Canberra on the Ijßth, the chairman of the Commission (Sir John Butters) gave an indication that-changes in the form of government might come. A Federal Minister is supporting the claim of residents of the Capital for some direct form of representation. He suggests that it may be possible at least to give the Territory a representative in the House without a vote, in the...

OOR AIN ROWAN TREE. [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 20 August 1927

OOR AIN ROWAN TREE. (The Highland Society of N.S.W planted a rowan tree, with Scottish soil, in Wellington Avenue, Canberra, on September ll, 1926.) When the roddins grow red on oor ain rowan tree, An emblem o' Scotia-brocht far ower the sea, That has noo set its roots in this bonnie coun trie, Sae far frae oor hame, 'Twill remind Scots to strive baith to live an' to dee True to breed an' to name. Sae fond are the thochts that the rowan trees bring, In fancy we follow like birds on the wing, Sae tender the notes o' the songs that we sing, As in fancy we soar, Towards where sweet mem'ries aroond them still cling, On Auld Scotia's shore. "First Families" [Newspaper Article] — The Federal Capital Pioneer Magazine — 20 August 1927

"First Families" By MABEL JUST BRENNAN. Canberra! Thou of the wind-scoured plains, which visionless souls of to-day dis- miss and desert as a "bleak, barren holet1' Those who having the choice of being "exiled/' as they now term it, if they reject it not are enduring it with fretting souls. But when their materialistic souls have become spiritual bodies they and their early descend- ants will take it as a personal virtue that they were "first families"-a virtue which they did not willingly propagate. Other souls with temporal vision rejecting the "exile" stay in the cities, forgetting that these, too, were once "bleak, barren holes" where our forbears, having no choice, per force "stayed put/' The visionary soul, and there are some, thanks be, bounds ahead of its temporal body and sees a city with thousands of restless feet bearing their owners about their business and pleasures. The same soul gets a daily thrill in seeing the skeleton City of 1927 be- ing, brick by brick, created t...
