Some People's Pads [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 14 August 1914

Some Peoples raas. BY KAIT. T'nonN. It is singular what a mania the itu' nan race at large has for col!ccting bings-things variously designated by heir collectors as "specimens, relics, :eepsakes, souvenirs, curios," etc. Almost every one, at some period ol uis or her existence, has been smitten with the collecting fad. O The scientifit., man goes into rocks mnd minerals, and fossils, and butter. lies, and he cannot for the life of him inderstand why all his friends are not inthusiastio the same way. The value or importance of every. hing in this worMk depends entirely ipon one's point of view. The man who has a fad for collecting tntiques haunts the auction rooms, Lnd travels hundreds of miles to attend ounhtry auctions. - He visits old louses where there might possibly-be a >lue china bowl of ancient date, or. a heumatic fiddle-backed chair that - Washington sat in. Most o, these old Things have some connection with Vashington, or possibly with Laiay ;tte, who seems to be a goo...

AMERICAN FARM LAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 21 August 1914

AMERICAN FARM LAND. According to a recent census, the land area in crops in the United States where acreage was -given was 311,000,000 acres. This is about 16 per cent of' the total land area, or about 27 per cent. of the estimated po tential tillable area of the United States, excluding foreign possessions. In other words, for every 100 acres that are now tilled, about 375 acres may be tilled when the country is fully developed. In the development of the agriculture of the country, the land which was most easily brought into a state of cultivation, as the great Mis sissippi Valley, was the first to be brought into such use. -Extension of tilled area will be at greater expense for clearing, drainage, irrigation, etc. The increased production of the fu ture will be the result of increased yields per acre as well as extension of area..
