Mining Notes and Tips [Newspaper Article] — The Clipper — 29 July 1893

Mining Notes and Tips 1 [Bt Gnomb.] Experts, including some of our iiighly-paid Government officials, pro nounced the nickel deposits at the Whyte River to be of no commercial value. A stranger comes to our colony aud at once recognises the deposit to be of great value, secures the ground, and is likely to make a good tiling out of it. A hundred weiguc or tne ore sent out or the colony (not tried here) returned 30 per cent, of nickel, showing the lode to be one of the richest known. In examining the deposit one of the officials above referred ? to mistook a rich sulphide of nickel ore for mis pickel (arsenical pj'rites.) A simple blowpipe test would have proved its value in five minutes. At the Queeu the concentrators are now making three shifts. I pre dicted some time ago that those who were selling Queens for a few shil lings to buy Westerns at a high figure would bite their fingers. They are now doing so, aud are selling Westerns to buy back Queens. This mine should now be in a p...

Political Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Clipper — 29 July 1893

Political Notes. On Thursday night a well-deserved tribute was paid to the memory of the late Chief Justice Higinbotham, on the motion of Mr. Clark, but what extremely bad taste on the Treasurer's part to forecast party feeling and discussion on Mr. Higinbotham's de mise. A great man's death will always draw forth tributes of regret from all CM anno nf nnininn The Financial Statement was list ened to with great attention, and called forth but few ejaculations of comment. As the dreary waste of figures and facts were waded through Treasurer Henry wetted his whistle with undiluted water, and occasionally did some sharp shooting at members on the Opposition Benches. At length, when all was done that Treasurer could do, every member feeling that at last Tasmania was taxed from head to foot, the House was l-esolved into Committee of Supply, and the ques tion of imposing the Primage Duty upon all goods, with the exception of the martyrs, tea and sugar, forthwith, met with some objection, ...

FREE SPEECH THE TREASURER'S BUDGET. [Newspaper Article] — The Clipper — 29 July 1893

fREE 6PEE0H. THE TJftBASURBR'S BUDGET. The Iong4ooked for Financial State ment was delivered on Thursday night. The Treasurer/appeared ill at; ease and irritable at starting, reveal ing his unhappy temper by unreason able resentment at an ordinary inter jection from ttie member for West Devon. Bat as he proceeded, and found everybody else in a favorable : mood, the tension, of his own. mind' somewhat relaxed, and he succeeded in delivering what he characterised as a '' none too cheerful statement,' in a fairly satisfactory way. Of course it was not pleasant to have to contest that his estimates, made so; recently as last October, had been so very wide of the mark, that be now announces big deficiency where he had foretold a surplus. But every one' admits that the times are so out of , joint that the most prescient Treasurer might well have been thrown oat in his calculations. There is no quarrel or dispute as to the cause of the huge drop in our revennes. The causes are common to al...
