The Sin of Fretting. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

The Sin of Fretting. There is one sin which, it seems to me, is everywhere and by everybody underestimated, and quite too much overlooked in valuation of character. It is the sin of fretting. It is common as air, as speech— so common that, unless it rises above its usual monotone, we do not even, observe it Watch any ordinary coming together of pr6ple, and see how many minutes it will be before somebody frets— that is, makes more or less complaining statement I of something or other, which probably everyone m in the room or in the car or on the street If corner, it may be, knew before, and probably H nobody can help. Why say anything about m\ it? It is cold, it is hot, it is wet, it u dry; I; somebody has broken ail appointment, ill. ft cooked a meal; stupidity or bad faith some- m\ where has resulted in discomfort. There are [M plenty of things to fret about. It is simply: mi astonishing how much annoyance may be si found in the course of every day's living, even [\ of the simplest...

Orthodox Burial. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Orthodox Burial. Rabbi Gamliel who was the recognised head of the Jewish people 'about eighteen :hun(3riea': years ago, noticed with alarm the growing tendency of pomp and display at funeral. One tried to outdo the other, clothing the deceased in the costliest of raiments, making in his opinion a farce 6f the In st sad rites. He called the rabbis togetner, ana in convention the rule adopted, insisting that all Jews be consigned to the tomb in similar garb. The white robe was adopted, and to this day all orthodox Jews are thup interred. It is a simple and beautiful rite, denoting that rich and poor go alike before their Maker. There are many orthodox cus ? toms we are glad to see abrogated, because of having abrogated their usefulness. The plain burial of orthodoxy, however, stands to-day as firm as when Rabbi Gamliel first introduced it, and we hope the reform element in Judaism will not encroach upon that ancient Rabbi's wisdom. — JJehrew Observer. Reduction of Overdrafts. MELBOURNE AND SYDNEY. A CONTRAST. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Reduction of Overdrafts. MELBOURNE AND SYDNEY. A CONTRAST. The-Executive of the Great Synagogue are much disappointed at the result of their appeal to the country members of the community. The ministers are always granted for any requirements in the country districts, bat the Executive consider their efforts to keep the interest of Judaism alive is not meeting with the success they deserve. In Melbourne, although the calls upon the Jewish people have been very heavy of late, they have responded very liberally indeed. The President of the Bourke-street Synagogue issued circulars on the lines of the Board of Management, Sydney, and in less than three days over £1400 was collected and promised. The liberal donations are headed by Messrs I. and J. Kronheimer £300, and Mr O. Franklin (of Messrs Kronheimer and Co ) £250, and Mr Gollin £100. Considering the losses on the Carnival of' £1000, besides the £700 originally contributed, these are splendid results. For, of course, in such a compa...

Reform in England [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Reform in England. The United Synagogue in England comprises a number of Synagogues under the spiritual guidance of Dr. Adler. According to its con stitution it is an orthodox organisation, and the chief rabbi is required to give his decision in all ritual questions in accordance with the Shulchan Aruch. For some time past there have been attempts made to introduce- certain ritual changes of an unorthodox character. Choirs with female voices have been organized recently in three of the London Synagogues* notwithstanding the objections raised by the orthodox. Dr. Adhr has not prohibited these mixed choirs, and the reason given by those who profess to s^peak for him is ^that his per mission was not requested, and that he only;, considers himself ca led upon to exercise his? veto where his opinion is formally asked. lm other words, he is held to wink at changes; which are made without formal reference to him. As a remit of this policy, a number of' members who objected to a mixed choir...

Women as Lawyers. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Women as Lawyers. ? * ? Miss Ethel R. Benjamin, L.L B , contributes to the ' Press's '' weekly symposium an article i ntitled 'Women and the Study and Practice of the Law,' and thus answers the question 'Is there any need for women lawyers ?'' ' It seems to me that they are really wanted. Is it riot desirable that women should be able to consult members of their own sex regarding the many delicate questions on which they dai-y have to be advised ? To the woman lawyer women can speak without reserve, and many whox modesty has compelled to suffer in silence rather than to confide their trouble to one of the opposite sex will have an opportunity of goine to a woman for legal advice. And surely the woman lawyer will be welcomed by many of her ' fallen sisters.' The woman lawyer, with her varied knowledge of human rature — of its frailty and weakness, and many of the temptations which are placed in women's way, may be relied on to hold out her hand to her erring sisters, and to do her ut...

.We cannot refrain, on reading the accounts of the great successes of the Bey. Isidore Myers, and the sterling marks of appreciation ajbbrded him in America, from thinking of the consideration which he received whilst in Sydney. Truly, he saw the hitter dregs of discouragement meted out to him. More than one fast day not on the Jewish calendar fell to his lot from sheer necessity; often his breast Has been the repository of an aching heart burthened by the arrogance of an unheeding ' Community. Yet, Isidore Myers was ever in earnest ; his charity knew no bounds, and his ministerings were always deeply thought out and eloquent. To day there are hundreds who have his kindnesses still before them, and instances of his lavish benevolence are not wanting grateful recognition. Occasion upon occasion he filled the Synagogues- with persons eager to listen to his masterly addresses in his struggle for the emancipation of Judaism from the thraldom of indifference, but he had to succumb; he wa...

THE REAL NEW WOMAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

THE REAL NEW WOMAN. There is so much nonsense written by writers who try to be funny, and succeed in being silly, at the expense of the '? New Woman ' that we quote the following verses from a paper which can be witty and is generally wise as well. We refer to London ' Punch.' I own there are heights that she cannot attain, She is not at home with a gun, In pastimes where one living creature is slain She cannot perceive any fun J And never a poor feathered songster has died Her hat or her bonnet to grace ; And after the hounds i- were torture to ride, Lest Reynard should lose in the race. And much she ignores that New Woman should learn And still she refuses to smoke ; n One wine from another she cannot discern. But she's splendid at seeing a joke. Her love and her friendship no labour can fret, No jealousy seems to alarm. In truth, not a mortal could ever forget Her humour, her kindness, her charm. : Those dozens of friends of her fealty boast, Her desk with epistles is packed, Her...

Expulsion of Jews from Prussia. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Expulsion of Jews from Prussia. Sometime ago we (The Hebrew Standard of New Yoi'k) reported that the Prussian Government was? expelling Jews from Memel. The expulsions still con tinue, and only last week an old Jew was -arrested because he did not leave the town within the specified! time. The man was from America, where he became? an American citizen and prosperous. How much the departure of these good citizens is regretted is shown by the fact that even the officials assist the unfortunate victims in drawing up petitions asking for a respite. The rabbi of the town, Dr. J. Rulf, and others have; issued an appeal on behalf of the expelled and those still receiving notices to leave. It appears that these expulsions cover a period of two years. After the first notices were served the Council of the Synagogue left no stone unturned to effect a withdrawal of the order,, but all was in vain. Before the expulsion of 1835 the Jewish community numbered 1300 souls ; now only 800 remain, and ...

The Montefiore Home. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEBREW STANDARD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

ll\e Montefiore Home* To the Editor of The Hebrew Standard. Sir, — Seeing your appeal towards the Montefiore Home, I would like to bring under your notice that some better provision be made for holding Minyan Services than has existed, in the instance of which I was very seriously annoyed. Thanking you in anticipation of a brief notice. I remain, yours respect fully, YAHRZIET. (On inquiry at the Home, we are informed by the Matron that so far as possible if she is notified ud till noon on the day Minyan is required, she will endeavor to arrange for any of the old persons capable of being present attending, and at all times the wishes of the subscribers and friends of the Home will be as cour teously treated as reason and experience will permit. Mrs. Barnett has always accorded us the fullest courtesy, and we are astonished to find any complaint being made in that direction.— Ed. H.S.) Wellington, October 4, 1897. Notes and Comments. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Hotes and Comments. It is only fair that there should be a down pour of rain the first night of Succoth. His tory repeating itself. It is quite enjoyable from a junior's point of view wading to the Home ' to dwell in the Succoth.' Of course we hardly expected the Rev. J. H' Landau would say a blessing for the Succoth, when it owing to the rain, wa9 compulsorily decked with a lid. It would be more than a shame to let Mrs Barnett's pretty decorations and artistic display be spoiled by too closely following the ultra orthodox ritual. At any rate the stars were not on view that evening. The children's visit to Mr. J. L. Dolowitch's Succoth was a real treat. They all enjoyed xheir host and hostesses bountiful spread to xheir utmost capacity. What are our rabbi'3 ' driving at ' with their recent sermons. The Rev. A. B. Davis still appreciates natural beauty. His descrip tion of a pretty girl is more than one young man's ideal. The Rev. Isidore Meyers is being fully lionised in San Francis...

Reviews. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Reviews. A. ? By the American mail which arrived on Monday last quite a host of newspapers came to hand. We are pleased to acknowledge our most esteemed con temporary The Hebrew Standard, of New York. We have so often acknowledged ourselves indebted to this Journal that our readers have long since formed their own estimate of its excellence. ?The Jewish Voice reaches us for the first time from St. Louis, Mo. The Voice is in its XXIII volume. ? Like the other American Jewish Newspapers it appears ? worthy the ample support it receives. The Voice of Masonry, an old friend, and the most valuable production devoted to the interests of Free I - masonry, reaches us regularly. A Journal of more ; varied interest it would be hard to find. With much regret we notice the trials its Editor has been subject to. We tender our grateful and fraternal sympathy. ] The American Israelite, published at Cincinnati, O.. is a most welcome exchange.
