No Title [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 8 May 1914

Mr H. . WV- Lawson, Minister for Lands, accompanied by Mr John Gray, M. L. A. visited the Walpeup Shire on Monday, Tues day and Wednesday. At all places they visited settlers wer'- ,--.-a L.- -r.Aons-answered. At Mur rayville (although there is in existence a progress accociation) no arrangements had been made to meet the Minister and no meet ing had been called. The party arrived in Ouyen by the evening train on Wednesday and were the guests of the Shire President (Cr. H. W. Pickering) at a dinner prior to the 'meeting held in the hall. A gathering of over 200 attendpnr to listen to the Minister and Mr Gray, and a number of questions were answered evidently to the satisfaction of those present. A rush of late advertisements necessitates holding over reports of the meetings until next issue. A report of the local court pro ceedings on Wednesday and corres pondence from Boinka has bsen unavoidably crowded out. These will arpear next issue. The Ouyen Presbyterians hold their flower sh...

Dealing With Stinkwort. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 8 May 1914

Dealing With Stinklwort.| i---«----- i In several districts in Vi.-toria, as in South Australia, the stink wort is looked upon as a danger ous weed, It is among the plants proclaimed for the whole State under the Thistle Act. As yet it has not got nearly such a hold in Victoria as in the sister State. It put in an appearance at Nhill some years ago, and is ubserved with varied feelings in that locality. Mr Geo. Batson does not consider it necessarily as th'- enemy of the wheat-grower, and he believes it has some value for the sheep-man. Where grazing the stubbles and the fallow is done at the right time he says it can be easily kept down, As an example, in his vineyard the stinkwort is just rcw 2ft. high, while in an adjoining paddock, open to stock, it is not 2 inches. " The point is," according to Mr Batman, "you must feed the stink I wort off at the right time, or when tflre pra v me yvuuY ..U-, . -.-A , if xc.n stock pretty-heavily at that stage the weed does not get a .h'c,- c ...
