Punishment of Refractory Prisoners. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

Punishment of Refractory Prisoners. WHAT shall we do with our incorrigibles ? The application of the word to a law-breaker means that he is beyond the influence of correction by pun- ishmen. When that is the case the infliction o punish- ment becomes blind savagery, as brutal and as senseless as would be the attempt to flog a maniac into right reason, or torture a consumptive invalid back to perfect health. The strong arm of the law seems to have been dealing in this way with a couple of notorious Melbourne criminals. They had been indulging in the usual games of the incorrigible,   showing proofs of insubordi- nation and damaging furniture in the cells. So one of them has been ordered into solitary con- finement for three weeks and the other for nine days on half rations. If there offenders had been again and again experi- mented upon in this fashion, as   appears to be the case, until the conclusion has been reached that they are incapable of being &a...

THE PITT TOWN LABOUR SETTLEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

THE PITT TOWN LABOUR SETTLE- MEN'T.   THE following is condensed from an article published in the STAR, written by a special reporter of that journal : - The Pitt Town labour settlement, we are being told from time to time by persons who presumably have some reason of their own for the belief that is in them, is to be a failure. Candidly we do not believe them. We have been over the place, have seen the sturdy settlers working as men will work when they know that the proceeds of their labour is wholly for themselves, have seen the homes they have built, the forest that they are clearing, the soil that they are tilling, and cannot see why they should fail when others with no greater advantages have succeeded before them. There, where six months ago was open forest country, in which nothing could be heard but the chop of the woodcutter as he felled the heavy timber, or the lowing of the neighbouring settlers' kine as they wandered through the shady avenues, cropping the s...

MR. MORGAN'S MEETING. (To the Editor of the LIBERAL.) [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

MR. MORGAN'S MEETING. (To the Editor of the LIBERAL.) SIR, - I was at Morgan's meeting 0n Monday night. Rather rowdy, wasn't it ? Quite new for Dubbo. Sort of Active Service Brigade flavour it. Quite   respectable, though. I recollect about three years ago seconding a certain James     Morgan as a fit and proper person, &c. (not in Dubbo, you know). My candidate said then he was a labour Candidate. Labour candidate first, anything else afterwards. Wonder is that the same Morgan ? Don't think so. This Morgan is opposed to class   legislation. Didn't say so then. £300 a year, and hobnobbing with Sir George Dibbs and Co. - evil communications corrupt good manners. They all do it. Our James is a thorough democrat, anyhow ; don't care individually any more for the banker and the squatter personally than he does for the working man ; means to legislate for the B and S, though, all the same. J. is sound on banking matters ; square...

DUBBO V. MARYVALE. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

DUBBO V. MARYVALE. The following will represent Dubbo in the match against Maryvale on the Oval this afternoon. Players are requested to be in attendance at 10.30 sharp, as the visitors will have to leave by the mail train at 5 p.m. E. Howe, W. Hives, P. Kable, H. Grace, H. Ranken, C. Soane, D.   Soane, F. Fisher, D. Armstrong, M. Dunn, G. Taylor. Speaking of the late match between Dubbo and Bathurst, " he Demon," in the Bathurst TIMES, says : - I visited the show ground to umpire the match Dubbo v. Bathurstians. I had understood that the match was to be an all day one, and the Dubboites were evidently under the same impression. A great deal has been said, and a little written, as to the selection of a team to represent the Bathurstians. With this con- troversy I have no desire to deal, but when a team is announced as being a " district" one, there should be no mistake about it. As it turned out, the eleven representing the Bathurstians was neither one thing nor the oth...

Open Column. A SWIMMING CLUB. (To the Editor of the LIBERAL.) [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 10 February 1894

Open Column. [Correspondence is invited on matters of   local interest. It must be distinctly under- stood that we are not responsible for the views expressed in letters under heading.] A SWIMMING CLUB. ( To the Editor of the LIBERAL) SIR, - I was greatly pleased to read an article which appeared in your last issue, suggesting the formation of a local swimming club. I have often wondered that the large number who bathe in the river have never attempted to organise such a club, which would soon become one of the most popular of our institutions. The list of local amuse- ments obtainable is not very extensive, and occasional swimming tournaments would be   welcomed by those who perhaps are unable to take part in the cricket matches which at present constitute the chief outdoor summer pastime of Dubboites. Then again under the supervision of the members of a swimming club, many of those at present unable to swim would acquire a practical knowledge of the art, ...
