State Sohool Improvements. --*- ( HIGH AND HORNBY STREETS < During the Xmas vacation exten sive alterations and repairs were carried out at the State Schools in High street and Hornby street. The old-fashioned galleries, in which the children were crowded together, have been replaced by modern " dual " desks. These are not only more comfortable for the scholars, but also afford the teachers better opportunities of supervising the work of the pupils. A still greater improvement has been made ia the appearance of the walls and ceilings. These are now light and cheerful, the prevailing tint being a very light shade of green, which proves very restful to the eyes. Previously it was the universal custom in our schools to have all the windows frosted. This is no longer the ease. The frosting has been removed, and the windows on the sunny side have spring roller blinds attached. The improvements are much ap preciated by both teachers and scho lars. All the class rooms are bright...
