THE PARLIAMENT. HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY. TUESDAY, Sept. 11, 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 12 September 1888

THE PA aLIAM^N^ HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY. TUESDAY, Sept; 11,1888. The House met at 2 o'clock. The Commissioner of Publio Works (Boo. A. Catt) moved the a econd read ing of tbe Waterworks Amendment Bill in an exhaustive speech. He stated that the Works had already cost £274,000 and £102,000 were still required to complete the head works, and £2000 to complete the mains already laid down. It seems tbat the original estimated cost of the head dam was altogether wrong* having been set down at £120,000, and when concrete was adopted instead of stone it was ex. pected that a saving of £48,000 would have been effected; tint now it seems that the total cost of tbe present wall will be £131,000. Already 138 miles of pipes have been laid, and when the system is completed there will be 378 miles. To complete the mains to Wallaroo and Melton will require £107.000, and for the system surveyed sooth of this line £72,000 Altogether the work would cost £557,000. They expected by June nest to have two hund...

DISTRICT BOUNDARIES. TO THE EDITOB. Sir,--I should not trouble you again on the subject, but for the childish and unmanly spirit of " Wiltunga Ratepayer.*' From beginning to end of his epistle lie has sought to show that every person who has had anything to do with the agitation has been actuated by dishonest motives with a desire of personal gain. Your correspondent not being satisfied with abusing those, who have agitated, has coupled the District Clerk in the matter. I kDow nothing of what the Clerk has done or said, neither do I care, bat I can assure " Wiltunga Ratepayer" that the Clerk knows nothing of my wrifciDg. With reference to the building of the Council Chamber, it may |»e .& source of satisfaction to ** Wiltunjfck^Ratepayer" to know that I shall be ipiuch closer to it if built on the proposed site, than at STinnes plains. I need scarcely remind him of the old proverb, « i); takes j* tbiEf to catch a thief," which is veil followed put in his favoQr to yoo of the...

gaitimt K SBnllaraa ?imts XAMHA, WEDNESDAY. SEPT. 12, 1888. THE BEETALOO WATER WORKS. The majority of those who attended the ratepayers meeting, at Kadina, on Saturday last, showed by their votes that they are prepared to consider!, the question of rating, in^connection with the Beetaloo works, in the same spirit of liberality which has characterised the people of the district in the past. And there can be no doubt that coming at a lime when the Commis: sioner of Public Works as introducing a Bill on the subject, the resolution passed will hare considerable weight, ; , ^ The Beetaloo scheme of^raterjSiopply lias hada .somewhat-chequered career. ' . L-'w.= It was started before the working plans were ready, and pushed on sub sequently to reach a part of the dis trict sixty miles away in a few months, in order to relieve those who were suffering from the effects of two dry seasons. So there has of necessity. been a much larger expenditure than would have been necessary under more favo...

PUBLIC MEETING OF RATE-PAYERS—KADINA. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 12 September 1888

PUBLIC MEETING OF RATE PAYERS-KADIN A. A public meeting of ratepayers was held in the Council Chamber, Kadina, on Saturday afternoon, to consider the ques tion of tbe Beetaioo water assessment. The Chairman of the District Counoii (Mr F. Alien) occupied the chair. The CHAIRMAN explained that on Satur day last at the time advertised lor the meeting he had attended with representa tives of the local newspapers, bat no one appeared, as it afterwards turned oat tbey were more interested in a hone sale. However, they bad not lost anything by the delay, as an Amended Waterworks Bill had been introduced embodying the provisions which had been asked for. The rate was on the acreage held, and the area was reduced to .3 miles from the pipes. The rates would be 3d for tfae first mile, IJd for the second, and Id for the third mile. That was a vast improve ment on the former proposal. A water supply was the most important question they had to consider, and it pressed more upon them every year as...
