The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, SATERDAY, NOV. 8. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 8 November 1879

Vita tine Uieru mart at. BLAC&ALL, BATDBDAY, NOT. e. SINCE the railway terminus was opened to Emerald the merits of the old and new ro&ds to Blackall and Tambo hare been fully discuBBod in the local papers and fiockhamptonjournals; but, while so many conflicting interests ware to be studied, we abstained from advocating in this paper either ronte as the most suitable or best. The withdrawal of the traffic from (he Springsure road will of course considerably injure those whose business is sustained by the custom of travellers upon this line; but however much wc may rogret that a few must suffer it ought sot to interfere with the interests of the great majority. It must have been foreseen many years previously that as the Central Railway extended out west, so the old roundabout route through Springsore would have to be abandoned sooner or later. With the terminus at Emerald it-is absurd to keep traffic on roads which describe a semi circle before Blackall is readied, an...

Puzzling the Lawyers. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 8 November 1879

Puizling the Lawyers. Wbizing concerning the Newman Hall case In London, tho correspondent of a New Zea land paper says: "Prominent in the lengthy proceedings stands out tlie crags-examination of Mrs, Hall by Sir Q. James. The lady appeared calm and self-possessed, but the natural instability of her temper could not endure the severe and bitter questions of the learned counsel. She became very excited, inveighed against ' Newman Hall,' as sho invariably called her husband, in language more forcible than complimentary : tears at once and defiance, hysterics and gesticulations combined to make her the liveliest witness dull Westminster Hall has ever seen. Sir H. James was told, . You shall get nothing out of me, though you are a clever little man, I know,' to the intense amusement of the bar. <1 must insist on an answer,' said Sir Heniy. ' When you're quite calm, Til tell you,' was the cool reply. 'Now, madam .'-' I know what you're going to say, I could make your speech fo...

Racing Extraordinary Out West. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 8 November 1879

Racing Extraordinary Oat West. BY A VERACIOUS BOBIBE. THE trccs at Goodwood so anxiously looked forward to by our neighboring turf celebrities and public in general, came off with great iclat ou the 16tU October. The success of the meeting wor greatly indebted to die presenoe of the well-known Mr. James Hennessy, ably seconded by the redoubtable Mr. Fighting Bum, of M'jkay notoriety, and his amiable brothr_ Mr. Whisky; the latter informs us he has lately arrived from Scotland, but we heard rumors to the effect that he had only come from his uncle Ur. Bpriggs, of Brisbane. However that may be, true or not, there is no doubt that what with the amateur fighting of Mr. Bum, who condesoended to show us a little of his ecienoe, quite in his old style, the 4espcrate riding of Ur. Hennessy, the sing, ing, or bawling, whistling and blowing abili ties of Mr. Whisky. We are greatly indebted to these truly great and magnanimous spirits for the success attending the meeting.
